Super Deluxe Boom Mount - Tachyon Motorsports
June 2009

The SDBM saves another ring

There is no doubt that the Nautique hulls from the 80’s make great low-budget wakeboard boats. The narrow hull creates a very nice, low speed ramp for catching big air with little or no ballast. The addition of an extended pylon makes the classic 2001 hull a very good wakeboard boat at a fraction of the cost of a new Super Air Nautique.

However, nothing irks me more than the sight of one of these era boats, with the pylon ‘ring’ cut off to accommodate an extended pylon. Not only does it wreck the look of these classic boats but cutting off the ring also ruins the pylon for all other water sport activities like slalom, trick and even tubing. The worst part is that none of it is necessary. Not another ring needs to be cut from a classic Nautique, thanks to the ingenuity of the Super Deluxe Boom Mount (SDBM) from Tachyon Motorsports.

The SDBM answers the call for a non-destructive solution to using an older Nautique as an introductory wakeboard boat. The SDBM is made of solid aluminum and securely mounts to an existing 2.5” pylon giving you a second 2.5" ring-free pylon for mounting your extended pylon. The uniquely simple, solid aluminum mounting bracket, with its six stainless steel bolts, ensure the SDBM isn’t going anywhere once mounted. Plus, the rounded edges and recessed bolts allow you to leave the unobtrusive SDBM mounted when not in use without fear of injury to adults or children.

SDBM - Boom with extended pylon

The SDBM is also ideal for barefooters. As seen in the photo on the left, the SDBM can be used to simultaneously mount your barefoot boom for short-line and extended pylon for long-line. As any barefooter will tell you, having to make this change out on the water is far from desirable. With the SDBM, setup can be done on the dock or at the ramp and remain unchanged until you’re done for the day.

The best part of the SDBM is that it in no way interferes with the original rope hookup – whether you have a classic ring or newer ‘ball’ top pylon. You can switch from using the extended pylon for wakeboarding to the original pylon for slalom by simply moving the rope – no hardware change necessary.

If this article can save just one pylon from being decapitated of its ring, I will sleep better at night. I encourage you to join the campaign to ‘save the ring’ whether it’s on your boat, a friend’s or one you happen to see on the lake.

In all seriousness, the SDBM is the answer many are looking for that allows for the adaptation of an older Nautique to a killer, low-cost wakeboard boat. Likewise, if you are like me and have friends who ski, barefoot and wakeboard; the SDBM allows for less time ‘setting up’ your boat and more time skiing and riding with friends.
