Does anyone out there have any experience with an 80s CC Mustang. I'm looking at an 83 Mustang, that's in good condition with 680 hours and around $3500 which is pretty much around what I can afford right now for a wake boat. Been riding behind a friend's 15 foot outboard and we are looking to get something cheap that we can take care of and that has a decent wake.
I'm just wondering what kind of wake an 83 Mustang would puts out. Any info from someone who has any knowledge or experience with one of these (or an earlier model that has a similar hull) and knows what kind of wake they produce both weighted and unweighted, would be appreciated. Thanks |

They brought back the Mustang for 1982 and 1983.
Check it out in the reference section. Submit some pictures of the boat you are looking at !! Good luck !! Mike (Nautique Frk ) |

I think as the Tique took over the Nautique size in 82 and 83 @18 foot and the Mustang was simply a Renamed Tique as it was a 16 footer

I think thats correct. The '83 Mustang was the 16'5" hull, which dates back to the '71 Mustang. That hull was also used on the Skier (later renamed Ski Tique) in the 70's. |

So my 78 SkiTique is both an 83 Mustang and a 71 Mustang? If I average out the years, I end up with a 77. This could be true based on my reading that many boats were built in one calendar year and have a HIN for the year of sale...
If you plan on using it mostly for boarding, get a Flitepipe, not a tower. |

I think "Tim" is right about that, I was looking to buy one, it was an 82 and it was the same size as my nautique but it had a (302) in it!

Very interesting. I did check up on the reference page and I'm pretty sure it's a 1983 Mustang. it's indeed 16.5 feet long. Here are some pictures.
I can't test drive the boat since it's about 7 hours away, so I'm looking for some info on the kind of wake that it throws before I commit to going to see it. It is decent at all? How does it compare to say a SN2001? That would be my ideal boat, but it's pretty hard to get one in my price range these days. Anyway, any info on the wake, size characteristics, comparisons to the SN2001, would be appreciated. BTW, why would it be best to put a skylon on it rather than a tower? Other than preserving the vintage look, is there another reason? |

My 79 Ski Tique throws what I would call a good wake with about 200 to 250 lbs of weight added. I think you would get a little better wake out of a 2001, but you probably won't get one of those for the cash you are talking about.
That Mustang looks nice I think I would go for it. My family and I have been very happy with the Tique. I think the only negative of that 16.5 hull is a lack of space for more than four people to hang out. The Mustang/Tique will make a better wake than the out board and the speed control should be a lot better. If it's running good the two mods I would make right away are a extended pylon and a Acme 542 prop. Other than that you should be ready to ride! If you won't have more than two or three folks in the boat you may want to add a sack for weight as well. |

The 16' model is a little narrow for wakeboarding and on a strong pullout, the boat leans over and loses some wake height. Add a Tower and it's a significant lean and you have to constantly steer the boat away from the boarder during the pullout (reduces the lean and tracks straighter) and then steer into him while he's gliding in order to restore the wake. If you don't steer my boat like this then you have no pop. So if your planning on adding a Tower then I suggest you look at a larger boat.
However, at 36 mph the boat runs straight thru the slalom course even with very strong skiers trying to pull you offcourse. I love the slalom wake behind the 16' boat since it feels like one bump versus two bumps from the newer boats. Slightly harder bump behind the 16' but you get over it after a while. |

Thanks, sure appreciate all the info. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm really only going to use the boat for wakeboarding, but it's about the only thing that I can find within my price range. I'm sure it'll be better than the 15 foot outboard that I ride behind right now. Decisions, decisions. ha!

Good news. I found a SN2001 for $3500 in working condition. Interior needs work, but stringers and floor solid and engine running. The front seal on the transmission does need to be replaced as it's leaking, but other than that, it's good to go. BTW, which transmission would a SN2001 have? PCM 1:1 (Power Plus) or Borg Warner 1:1 (Velvet Drive)?
