Good morning. Wondered if any of you fine folks might provide a source for pet cock valves. I would like to replace the water drain plug on the engine block of my SN 196 with a pet cock valve for easy draining after those winter sets. Thanks for your help.

Do not use the cheaper ones that you typically find on the bottom of a radiator. These are a heavy duty type that I have put on all my boats. The center (stem) is compleatly removeable so you can probe with a wire for blockage.



You can find them at mcmaster carr. Put # 4921k2 in their search and the 1/4" npt will come up.

I used some small 1/4 turn ball valves. Similar to McMaster #47865K41.

I hook up a barbed hose fitting and a piece of hose to drain the block into the bilge area. I can also drain the anti-freeze back into bottles for proper disposal in the spring.

some of the newer boats have ball valves going to a central location making it real easy to drain the block, Napa does carry the higher quality pet cocks as Pete described, you have to specify that to the unlazy guy at the counter and have him look in the catalogs

If my memory is correct, the last one I did on my 77 PCM needed 4 - 1/4" (2 for the block and 2 for the manifolds) and a 5th 1/8" for the J pipe on the bottom of the circ pump. Don't forget about the oil cooler. I still pull the hose off it. My 64's cooler self drains. Is your boat equiped with a raw water strainer? The bowl will need to be unscrewed if it has one.

Pete, do you have log style manifolds? The PCM pyramid plug is sigificantly larger than the block plugs.

HW, Yes I have logs but the drains that Eric and I have decribed do come in 3/8" pipe too. Beyond that (1/2"?) a reducing bushing whould be required.

Anyone planing this should check their pipe sizes!!

Pete, this is your motor, correct? If so, I dont think its a PCM. Ive heard that Escort was the predecessor to Commander. Both of my PCM's ('78 and '90) have the same exhaust and cooling systems, and they dont look like this.

Tim, Yes, It has "pleasure craft marine" Right on the ID tag with their numbering system. Was it a early PCM?

I thought that Escort was the predecessor to Commander, and Waukesha was the predecessor to PCM. I could be totally wrong. Ive never seen an earlier PCM/Waukesha to be sure- but I know my '78 uses the same pieces (t'stat housing, RWP, exhaust manifolds) as my '90.

Tim, You put me into my research mode! I wasn't sure of those years with the engines and I was curious. Got in touch with a friend and this is his email responce:

"The Waukesha's are easily identified by the hi-rise manifolds. They were green and then painted black when PCM took them over. Waukesha built many different engines in the industrial field in, you guessed it, Waukesha WI. The Escorts, as I recall came out of Detroit, and had log manifolds and genuine Ford graphics, so I am assuming it was a later version of a Ford Industrial Engine previously known as Dearborn Interceptor. The Escorts and Waukesha's were available at the same time and as I recall, there was sometimes a slight difference in price, but not much. I remember ordering and picking up parts from a official Ford Industrial warehouse in Brookfield WI. I only remember one or two Commanders. I thought they were made in FLA."

Pete, that makes sense. Perhaps Escort was a remnant of Ford/Interceptor, rather than the predecessor to Commander. The manifolds sure look similar. The t'stat housing and RWP mounting sure look similar to the Commanders though. Lots of them in the diaries, but no good pics. Ill see if I can find one.

I guess its safe to say that you dont have a PCM/Waukesha though?

Its not hard to swap that tag, Pete- its just bolted onto the intake manifold, right? I swapped mine over to the new intake on my '90. My Tique doesnt have one- feel free to send me yours. I dont think your tag is original!

How many engine block drain plugs are on my Excalibur (SB Chevy)? I believe there are only (2), starboard (1) has the knock sensor and the port side is tapped for the HW supply on the shower. Am I missing some? Both those I mentioned are forward on the block. Would like to add some of those drains like Pete showed if possible.

I sent you an email this morning. I'm gonna take the pics of the Commander in my 79 Tique today. I'll send them to you this afternoon. I'll also try to post them to this thread but have not yet learned how. I guess it's as good as any to learn as it's cold and dark around here right now.

Do Not modify the plumbing as to the knock sensor,it relies on the sound wave to detect detonation through the water jacket.
It is a piezo-electric system that has a specific location and distance to work properly........

I dont think anyones considering modifying it, Doc. PCM just plugs it into the block drain- gotta pull it to get the water out. You probably dont have to do that much down in the swamp, eh?

Doc that is what I'm asking! You can install these drains everywhere else but still left having to pull the knock sensor right?

Yeah, I think thats right.

I think Ive mentioned it before, but a piece of step flashing works great to keep the water off the carpet when draining.

I think because of the engine tilt removing the sensor is not needed, is it forward and slightly above the rear drain? If so this added step is not needed........

The new CC's have the engine mounted almost perfectly flat. According to that tutorial I linked to, there is only 1 drain per side, and the knock sensor is in one of them. Do you have to pull both drains, or will you get most of the water with just one (to avoid pulling the knock sensor)?
