1957 Gray Marine 70hp

   Having a time with carbureter and timing adjustment on 1957 Atom Skier with 70hp Gray Marine.  The carb is a one barrel updraft and has been rebuilt a number of times.  I can get it running (rough) with liberal use of starting fluid, but difficult to keep running long enough to get the carb and timing properly adjusted.  The carb continues to 'load up' and will not get full power. 

Any suggestions are very welcome- I love to tinker with the old boats, but this one continues to be a real challenge-

	If you don't get any suggestions, I've received good advise on my Fireball V8 Gray motor at marineengine.com and oldmarinengine.com forums.

	Thanks for your suggestion- both forums had some additional information that I did not have in the original Gray and Zenith carb manuals. Will give them a try this weekend. Thanks again-

	You said loading up. Is gas running out of carb ? If so the needle is stuck open or the floats hung. Those old carbs are really simple and are basically the same as older gas-burner tractors. You can get overhaul kits at any farm tractor parts house. (cheap)

	Thanks to all- it was a combination of timing and float height adjustment. It looks as if I bent the float arms slightly while reassembling the carb so many times. Got back into position and running better now!

	Jamie, I'm glad you found the problem with the float level set too high. I'm surprised that you had a problem because the setting is real sloppy. It can be off + or - 1/16" and stiil be ok. It had to be off a lot! If it does happen again, one good check for a high float level setting or a stuck float needle is to remove the drain plug on the bottom of the carb. On a up draft, the excess fuel will show up in the bottom of the carb. BTW, get rid of the damn starting fluid!! It may be too late because you may have already caused damage to the cylinder walls and rings. Ether is a very strong solvent and will wash the oil off the cylinder walls. Since you like to "tinker", run a compression check and report back.
