3 Morse MV-2 Controls. All look pretty decent, with 2 of them being unused, and 1 still in it's original box with all hardware and instructions:

Those MV-2's should be a direct replacement for my 1976 Ski Nautique? They look like it, but would like confirmation before I pull the trigger on one. Those on ebay right now have the pin located behind the lever. Our boats have the pin in front. It's the same part, and just needs to be re-configured, right? Thanks!! |

Since it's a California boat I think it's a Marine World boat, much more rare than a Cypress boat. bkhallpass could fill us in with more detail I'll bet- but might want to keep it under the radar until the auction ends so not to inflate the price for this gem.

If it were to sell at this price, adjusting for inflation it's what I paid for my Mustang. Doubt it will go for this price. A 96 sport in about the same shape hull wise but dirtier engine went for 3K in Florida a year ago which seemed crazy.

Pete, to be honest there may be nothing wrong with my MV1. The boat is currently in the shop for floor, carpet, and re-gel. The Morse control is one of the few things left on it. I might go up there tomorrow and pull it off the boat so I can inspect it from the inside before I spend good money on a new one. I recall it being very stiff and a little clunky feeling but that may be no fault of the control itself. (The boat was given to me and I never used it before starting this restoration, so I never got much experience with it) On the flip side though, part of me wants to replace it with a brand new one regardless since almost everything else on it is getting restored. I also have been reading up on the MV1 vs MV2 debate and I like the idea of added safety. |

Skip the mv2. Ive disassembled many and they can be returned to their original smooth, positive engagement with a little cleaning and regressing. I have only heard of- never seen- a control worn beyond saving. Not typical.

The added safety is great, especially if you are going to let kids use the boat. It's really not stupid money if you compare it to the MV-3, which IMHO is not as good of a control. We had a very stiff MV-1 and over the course of the winter I just put a few beads of gun oil around the shaft and operated the level occasionally. By spring, it work as well as if I had taken it apart and spent all day cleaning it and putting it back together. |

I assume we are talking about the collar at the base of the knob being the “significant safety improvement”? Consider me unconvinced of that... prevents someone from knocking it out of neutral inadvertently but that’s it.
The cause for the binding/stiffness on an older control seems to be the old, dry grease... getting that out and replaced with fresh will likely be a longer term solution than pumping a little extra oil in on top of the old. And a full day to disassemble, clean and reassemble? Only in Maine! Lol. That’s a 45min task around these parts. |

It’s not a big ordeal to tear down clean, and re grease and it’ll be every bit as good as new. Save the money for the new mv2 and buy new cables and it’ll be better than new. And the $12.99 for a kill switch that everybody hates and bypasses is one of the best safety devices you can have.

Tim is flat wrong. It’s an hour and a half job. 45 minutes to R an R but you spend 45 minutes looking for that ball and spring that sprung across the garage.
