Anyone seen this yet? It took effect last week.

LEAD BAN

If any of you ride dirtbikes or ATV's and want your kids under 12 to be able to do the same, you need to follow the AMA's links and write a letter! As of Feb 12th, it is illegal for a dealer to sell a bike/atv designed for anyone under the age of 12.

Over here, kids can do it, as long as it isn't on public roads... So in the country there's no problem...
Hope that law doesn't cross the ocean...
- Gun control means: using BOTH hands!
- Money doesn't make one happy, but when it rains cats and dogs, it's still better to cry in a Porsche than on a bicycle...

Mike,

What part(s) of an ATV/Dirt bike, etc. contain lead? Maybe a stupid question but could the Lead content be reduced or eliminated?

What I've read is that it is mainly the cheap overseas bikes that are coming in.
I also read that it is illegal for anyone, not just dealers, to sell the bikes and quads in question.

The question isn't stupid -- but the law banning dirt bikes for kids is!

I think the government thinks the kids are going to take a break from riding, and start chewing on the fenders.

   Tull,
It 's all imported products, not just the Chinese stuff. All Japanese products are included in the OHRV section of the ban. All of the bikes, etc.manufactured for kids under 12 have been pulled from the dealerships in our area.

   CQ,
Most alloys contain lead. Anything kids can come in contact with has been banned, including replacement parts,so you can't buy a brake lever, frame, etc. You can still purchase pistons, because they are inside the motor where they are out of reach.

Worst part is,this ban includes safety equipment, and right now the D.O.T. stickers on the back of helmets have enough lead to be banned,so you can't even buy a helmet. Smart!

Hopefully when it's sorted out the manufacturers will prevail and they are working on it,but right now it's still in effect.Everyone is scrambling to sort it out.I think the CPSC knows they screwed up,they just don't know how to fix it.

From what I have heard if it has a battery in it,it has too much lead.I don't understand how you could ban all sales, many 50's are raced by adults

So following that logic, how is the CPSC going to allow kids to get into their mom's minivan, or for that matter, the school bus? All exposure calculations include the time the individual is exposed to the hazard. The kids spend much more time on the bus than they do riding their ATV. Brilliant.

The ban was probably well intentioned but not well thought out. They should be spending more time on toys with lead paint that kids actually chew on and melamine in baby formula and candy for goodness sake. Thats about as rediculous to me as Congressional hearings on steroid use, big waste of money and time.

I think they'll get it fixed by the end of the year. Oversight

Here is the latest update if anyone is interested   UPDATE 2/16

Helmet ban is no longer an issue.Helmets are governed by the D.O.T. and NTSB so the CPSC has no authority .

HW, I agree. The end of the year is a long way away for bike shops though!
