I have a CC with an 1986 Indmar marine engine. Does anyone have any idea how to tell a 302 from a 351?

The 351W has an inch taller deck height vs. the 302. The easiest way to tell the difference in the boat is to look at the distributor mounting area in the block. On the 302 there's no reinforcing ribs, where as on the 351W there are two vertical ribs that reinforce the block wall in that area since it is taller. If you ever get a chance to look at a 351W and a 302 side by side I think you will also see that the 351 intake is almost 2 inches wider than the 302. After you get accustomed to seeing this difference it makes the 351 pretty easy to spot. Let me know if this helps. Post A pic and we can help.

(The 351W and 302 are very different:

The 351W has a taller deck height than the 302. (a 302 will have the intake almost flush with the base of the distributor... where it goes into the block..... a 351w will have about 1/2 inch lip there where the intake meets the block.)

Since the deck height is taller the intake manifold is wider on the 351w than on the 302.

The 351W uses a larger main journal than the 302. there are 2 physical ways of telling a 302 vs. a 351w. Also, in between the frost plugs on a 351W there will be what appears to be a triangle or diamond (the way I was told) indented cast into the block...a 302 doesn't have those.

a 351W is wider between the heads compared to a 302 (the intake manifold is wider by about 1-1/2") and 351 pistons have a different pin height. You can use 302 pistons in a 351 if you stroke it to a 393

quick ID tip: The lower thermostat housing bolt on the 302 will be below the top of the water pump and you won't be able to put a socket on it. On the 351W you can remove the bolt with a socket. )

Before we determine the size , lets find out who marinized that engine.
It should be a PCM 351 reverse rotion w/1:1 velvet drive.Indmar would be a transplant,and possibly a left hand motor......Boat dr

You have the wrong starter for whatever rotation it is that you have.   The dist should spin counter clockwise.

We worked about 4 hours yesterday trying to get it to fire but all it would do is turn. The motor will turn over very easily with a good charge but just will not fire. The plugs show a weak spark. The compression ratio on the cylinder that we checked was in the 140 range. When looking down on the distributor the rotor button turns clockwise. The only reason I thought it was an Indmar at the time is that it has an Indmar cover over the carb. We had two mechanics over yesterday and they were a little puzzled. They were sure it was a 302 though. The stamp on the top pully housing says 8-5-86. I just guessed that was the birthday of the motor. It could very well be LH or a PCM of some sort. We have not been able to match any numbers on the motor from the internet. According to the previous owner the following was done and it still would not start, new starter, Holly carb cleaned/rebuilt, new alternator, new battery, new guages, new plugs, plug wires, points, condenser. It appears that we now have fire from all the correct places except weak voltage from the ignition switch and a weak spark at the plugs. The boat is a rebuilt 1965 Correct Craft Nautique which is very attractive otherwise. The trans. is a velvet drive 1:1. Any ideas?

Hmmm, that sounds familiar. Is this your boat in the diaries?





It does look to be a genuine Indmar engine. If its ever been running and in the water with this powerplant, then the RH prop would indicate that the motor is a RH as well- and you'll need a CCW Ford Marine starter. As always, pics help.

well at this stage I would pull off the dist cap and verify that the rotor is spinning counter clockwise, if not get the right started so it does, next I would be looking at the timing, and then the voltage at the coil next might have to by pass the ballast resistor temporarily to increase voltage to the coil to get a hotter spark and get it to fire, then you can dial in the carb and timing and connect it correctly afterwards.

This is indeed the boat TRBenj. I would like to have your memory. The boat is very sound other than the starting problem so I took a chance knowing that it had a problem starting and believe that I came out to the good on this one. The owner said that he had it in the water last summer and that he has not started it this summer yet. Any other info you can pass on would be appreciated. Thanks

Sure sounds like you've already confirmed that you have the wrong rotation starter!

I have to ask, are your mechanics marine or automotive? If automotive, they may not know that marines are RR engines sometimes!

PBrainard..One mechanic was old school marine the other was auto. I do feel like I am at a very good starting point now. Thanks for all the help on the forum. I will post pics after my son and I get her ready for her debut on the lake.
