I have a 1978 ski nautique. My paint is kinda faded and cracked a little bit on the bottom. I was wandering what kind of paint is used to paint the boat? Whats the gelcoat for? why cant you use just clear coat off a car? Should I paint the decals on or just use some more decals? I have 3 stickers on the sides of the boat in the back protion of it, what are they, does anyone have pics of them so I can get some more?

The original graphics on the side of the boat were painted on. The rest (besides the decals) was all gel coat. Get the pictures posted so we can see what you're up against. Besides anti fouling bottom paint, no paint even the linier polys are ment to be in the water for more than a couple days (this includes clear coats).

Gel coat is a pigmented polester resin. Very thick and durable. It's what should be used. The cracking you are seeing in the paint is probabaly due to poor prep. It's got to come off the boat.

Yes, the decals are available.

Welcome, do some searching/reading on site and don't forget the pictures! You may have to wait for a week because alot of us will be at the reunion!

Speaking of decals. I just picked up a 1980 Nautique and the decals are pretty much tore up. Where can one look for new ones? We boat in Three Lakes also, would be great to meet.

I also have a 78'SN and in need of all decals. They were faded, so I buffed them off. Keith just e-mailed me with a vendors price of $580 shipped.Any chance someone could outline there's and send it to me and I'll take it to a sign shop? I'll pay for your time and shipping of course.
