Same question.

1990 Ski Nautique 240HP 1.23:1 tranny.

Only goes 38 with somebody barefooting.

I think it has a 14x16 on it now.

Tim, thats a tossup between the 1442 and 470. The 470 should turn just a touch more RPM's which a slower boat will need.

That being said, thats some terrible performance from that '90. Ive never encountered a slower hull than mine, and it would pull me (190ish lbs) 41mph from the Fly High with the Acme (470) back when the motor was stock. Throw a prop on it, but it may need more than that. Has it been tuned up?

I weigh about the same...

I have not GPS'd it yet to check. I don't know if it needs a tune up. It only has 300 hours on it. I never even knew they were considering a boat until they bought it. Ill probably check their alignment and whatever at the end of the year. No time to stop skiing with shoulder surgery approaching in the next few weeks.

You could try the 470 (15" pitch) but what why do you need more than 49 mph? Surely you could get away with 2-300 more RPM. That is a big boat though it's gonna be hard to make it go much faster.

Like Ive said before, the 6.0L likes lots of RPM's. The CCF boat pulls to 5700, which is where PCM says the power peaks on the 409. Only getting 4900-5000 RPM's out of the motor is leaving a lot on the table, and the steeper prop hurts the holeshot. I would expect you to pick up at least 400 RPM's by moving to the 470 from the 668 (or whatever the model number of the 422 with added cup is).

That is assuming that there isnt something else thats impacting your performance... under 5k RPM's seems pretty weak for that engine.

I know that's was bugging me, the hole shot is good, but I think it would be great to really pull these GT-40's. Wish I could improve both ends...You know the cake and eat it too.

Sometimes you can, and this may be one of those cases. Getting the most speed out of an engine means finding a prop that puts WOT RPM's right around time when the peak power occurs. If that means you need to turn more RPM to get there (PCM says the peak occurs at 5600) then a shorter prop should speed you up. A shorter prop will also improve the holeshot. Win-win.

Could you explain shorter exactly? Suggestions? I have one of the best prop shops in the tri-state area right here in Dallas. Maybe they can let me try some of your suggestions.

Shorter = less pitch.

If youre sure that theres nothing wrong with the engine to explain why its underperforming, then try an Acme 470 (12.5x15 3-blade).

I sure like what the Oj 13 X 15.5 did for my 09 Ski Nautique with the 409. Better hole shot, slightly faster top end with the same RPM. Slalom speeds it brought the rpm down about 30 rpm. Big plus on the OJ is they are not as fragile as the Acme stuff and great pricing too!

I bought both the 470 & 1442 (the 470 took a hit, couldn't get it fixed before GL). I like the 1442 a little better, as the engine turns a little slower at our wakeboard speed. But we don't overload the boat with ballast either.

Both are good props!

Hey Jody ive got a 79 SN 351 w im not happy with the hole shot at all top end speed is 49 ,im sure the prop is the original factory prop. i was thinking that if i went with a 4 blade prop then my hole shot would improve somewhat,im in fl also if you could tell me where your shop is i could try some different props so i purchase the right one for my needs.   Dave

Help me out guys, have a 1999 gekko gts 20 with 300 pcm plus. Currently runs at 4800rpm with a cvp prop 13x13 #599.....don't know what I should rev wfo or what the cup is on this prop. Everyone tells me that they no longer exist. Just got this boat, no manual and can't find anything out from PCM as to what I should rev. Would like to prop up but if I'm to rev 5000, then I'm already over proped! Any thoughts would be nice. Gekko website does not exist anymore.

I love all this techy prop stuff, gonna drive me to go out and see what the heck is actually on my boat! All I know is that it is a 4 blade which should in general provide the best hole-shot, but my big ole boat still will run GPS 46 mph at 4800 rpm. I do have another prop that I haven't tried which is a 3 blade. My understanding from Matt at RCM is that all things being equal, less blades is more speed for the rpm. His Jersey Skiff runs a 2 blade prop. I would think also that the biggest diameter that you could safely run would be good also, but I don't know that. I guess that it really is an art to come up with the best acceleration and top speed combo!

Props are still considered a black art After I went thru the gambit of numerous props on my SK Boat I finally called Eric At OJ and we came up with a plan, cut down a 15X21 stainless to 11.5X21. Boat takes off like a rocket and tops out at 83 mph at 5500 rpm. oh yea it's a four blade!!! Eric Say's to me I still know how to build props by hand!

Try one youl will like it.
