I have a 1966 correct craft mustang with a light/baby blue gel coat color. I started working on the gel coat the other day. I originally thought that someone had spray painted something close to the boat which accidentally put little dark specks on the gel coat but after some considerable sanding I think the specs might be in the gelcoat itself. Does it make sense that the gelcoat would come with these little specks from factory or is this damage? Also, can anyone recommend a heavy-duty rubbing compound for me?

Do a search for "3m product" and you'll find a thread which gives instructions to wetsanding process and a list of componds to go thru to get a "like new" finish.

And post some pics already!!!!!

Pics are posted on my other thread "Should I buy this 1966 Mustang"

I just dont know if the specks are supposed to be there or not, so I dont want to keep buffing if they were supposed to be there the whole time. Does anyone else have this color of boat?

Does it look like anyone has ever sanded and buffed the boat before? One of the first signs of going too deep is those little specs from the resin/glass under the gel starting to peek through.

Good looking boat! Sorry I couldn't see the pics earlier, I was posting on the blackberry.

I've got some small black specks on my Ski Tique which are coming out with wet sanding. I guess you could say it looks like spray paint (mine don't look that bad) but I guessed it was from age/storage in a bar or something along those lines.

Andrew,
Are these black specks on the deck? If so, they may be spider feces! No sh** I'm not kidding! I get them parked under the lifts canopy or in the boat house and they are really tough to get off! It's real tough sh**! Keep wet sanding and see what happens.
