I have a friend that is re-doing his boat.. He has a new dash panel to replace the old one, but we are wanting to know if there is a easy way of removing the 8 indicator lights as it appears they are hard wired to the switch and ground.
We have found replacements lights online, and they appear to have a connector on both ends, which would be nice if his were this way... Best we can tell he will have to cut each one and then splice them back... Is there a short cut you could share? |

He has taken care of it, found some connectors that would work.

I bumped it because i still dont know how to do it and i didnt see a response. Im replacing the dash panel on an 89 and im not sure how to get those 8 indicator lights out without cutting and replacing. Any tips would be appreciated.

You mean, these little guys, right? :
I don't have a great pic of those specifically. I don't think they are exactly plug and play unfortunately... Although, one wire does go to ground, so if you set up a ground bus, that side would be simple enough. I believe the other side goes to the switched side of the switches, or potentially to the source side of the accessory. That side, on mine at least, is twisted in with the associated wire.

Ahh, I think I understand what you mean... now.
This indicator lights push out of the front of the panel towards the driver, and all of the wiring is behind the panel. And you're trying to keep all of the original wiring the way it is, correct? I'm not sure if I have a good answer for you there... Bear in mind though, that if you have to do some re-wiring, it's not the end of the world. Most of boats of this era need some help there anyway. |

Take a read through this thread. I mean like potentially fully rewiring somethings. Replacing the daisy chained connections with busses.

I'm with Brian on this one. In my 89, all the panel light grounds are pigtailed together, which is pigtailed and heat shrinked to all the other grounds below the dash with one ground going up for the gauges. The only way to remove the lights completely is it cut the ends and splice them back together later. the other side of the circuit, each light goes to the corresponding switch (which is crimped in the terminal connector) with the exception of the ignition light. that gets tied into the ignition switch (purple).
To remove them from the panel itself, there are little tabs on the back side that you can pinch which will release the light and they will just pull forward provided the cables are free. Brian did a great job with his writeup on that link he posted. Others, myself included, would encourage you to use adhesive-lined heat shrink connectors when re-assembling.
