Hey guy's both my front speedos on my BFN are slow to respond and sticking at slow speeds and won't drop to zero even with lines off. but seem to read ok at speeds of 35 to 49 mph. Any tricks like lube speedo heads or something. boat was sitting for 10 year's

John,
The only way to really tell what's going on is to take a look inside. There may be some congealed grease on the rack/pinion gears. They however may free up with use. |

Same thing happens to me occassionally. Sounds like a plugged pitot tube(s). Try cleaning out the inlet to the pitot tubes using a paper clip or safety pin.
Cleaning always does the trick for me. Glen |

So I will clean the old grease off the rack/pinion gear in the speedo and check the pickup and tubes. what kind of grease do they use to lube them.

A very light application of thin (NLGI #1) silicone based grease would be ideal. It's not going to dry up and get sticky but finding it may be a problem. However, dielectric grease is the same stuff. You can get a small tube of it at the auto supply if you don't already have some. You should have some around anyway for when you're doing any electrical work on the boat. Report back when you get inside the speedos. |

Ok cleaned and lube speedo's today set them at the lake. used wd40 and some air and blew off all the hardware to clean them, then used clock lube used to lube moving parts on old clocks. WOW work better then new so smooth.
