I am trying to add more preload to the steering wheel of my 1997 196. My local dealer said to grind the trailing edge of the right side of the rudder. I have ground it quite a bit but no luck, it still tracks straight.
So am I supposed to grind it more, or am I on the wrong side? Please help, no preload makes it a doozy to try and keep in the middle of the course. |

Eric, that picture makes it look like your prop has been damaged. How about your tracking fins? Are they straight and true?

Surprised there has not been more feedback on this, wish I could help you but have never had to do it, have the tunable rudder on my boat.
You may want to consider also posting this question on Joel's (M3Fan's) site www.FifteenOff.com, would imagine you would receive some good feedback there. |

Yeah, I was really hoping to get some feedback. If I remember correctly the tunable rudder came out in '99. Gosh I wish I had that...
Keith - the fins and shaft are fine. We think we hit a piece of wood or something in the water. It is just the tip of one blade. |

The starboard side grinding will pull the aft end of the rudder towards starboard due to the lower water pressure now on that rudder side. Just like a airplane wing. This in turn will pull the boat towards starboard.

So do I need to grind more? My boat tracks perfectly straight and it drives me nuts.
