Pete, and/or all wooden boat experts;
Had dinner tonight at the Broken Oar in Cary after a few ski runs. This nice looking wooden boat pulled up, so I snapped a few pictures. Lets see if we can stump the master. What make, model and year?? As the model is on the side, I will have to give you that. Lets see if you get the year. We ought to have a summer Chicago Beers on the water, and hit the Oar. Maybe even take the Southwind out for a spin.

That would be a great idea Dave,but what about those stupid stickers for the waterway missmanagement?
I don't know the make or model,but I think that boat used to be down here by me for many many years. Is the owner a woman about our age? |

Waterway sticker?!?!?! Waterway sticker!?!?!?! I don't need no stinkin waterway sticker!!! Well, actually I guess I do, or I will get a nice big fat fine. You can get a one day sticker for like $15 or so. So, that is an option. I typically use the boat on Lake Geneva, Delavan, or Okauchee, so I never end up buying a full year sticker. Have you been running the Mustang much this summer? They had a car show going this evening and a dj spinnin' the oldies. Pretty fun place. Bruce....You are close. It is a 1958 model. Same year I was born. Hard to believe a 50+ year old boat is still out plying the waters. Thats the first flywheel forward engine I have ever seen. What is the purpose/advantage of a flywheel forward engine? |

Story has it that it allowed the engine to site lower in the boat. Our Mustang is flywheel forward. They quit making them early to mid 60's.
I knew someone that had a boat like that only with a V8. They live about 2 miles from me. They bought it new and I'd be very surprised if they no longer have it. Nice looking boat. |

Dave,
Next time, mask off the hull tags so it doesn't make it so easy! The Cavalier was the bottom of the Chris line trying to get even the leanest budgets into boating. Being a ply boat in the early 60's, it actually competed with Dunphy selling the X55 but the X far exceeded the interior upholstery job Chris did in the Cavalier. A better comparison would be the longer/later Atom's like Dave's.
Yes, Bruce is correct about the FWF engines. It did allow them to sit lower in the bilge getting the prop shaft out sooner and at less of a angle. But keep in mind, that was back in the days when flywheels were 24" plus in diameter!
BTW, Going FWF and then turning the engines around FWA is how we ended up with RR engines!! You were born in 58? how come you look so much older than I????

If that was the boat from here,the dad had it for many years.I had mine out just a couple of times just to test it for GL. I was working on it since April,filling sanding buffing etc.I plan on getting it back in soon. |
