Hi,

I am busy replacing the hose between the shaft log and the packing gland. The log diameter is 1 3/4", while the gland is 1 1/2".

This seems to be quite common - see this thread - http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13596&PID=156768&title=stuffing-box-to-shaft-log-hose

I see that the hose that came out of the boat was: Gates 24224 (1 1/2" 2-ply). The thread advises to use wire reinforced, but I don;t think a wire reinforced 1 1/2 inch will stretch enough, and 1 3/4" might not compress enough.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Greg

I do not believe any of the original shaft log hoses on my boats were wire reinforced. The older boats definitely use 1.5" hose. Even getting the non-reinforced stuff on can be a struggle.

Excellent, thanks.

I'll stick with the non wire reinforced hose then.

I wrestled with some wire re enforced hose for quite a while. Tried boiling it, beating the heck out of it with a hammer, all kinds of lubricant. The only way I could have gotten it on would have been to add an inch to its length as it hour glassed when trying to get it passed the lip of the log.

I ended up using Gates 1.5" that was fabric re enforced and was far better quality than the 40 year old stuff I pulled off. Keep it the same length as original which leaves little space between the log and packing nut, and will lessen its chance to twist.
