lesser expensive steering cable option

My steering is getting stiff. I haven't loosened it from the rudder yet to see if its stiff w/o the rudder, but I do believe it's probably time to swap out the steering cable.

Cable for my boat can only be purchased thru a CC dealer for around $300. Some other CC model steering cables are significantly less expensive ($190 or less) and can be purchased from other sources. I'm told that the cable for my boat is a special length and other cable options won't work mainly b/c of the rudder's tiller arm. Is replacing the rudder tiller arm with a different tiller arm an option? If that could be done, could a lesser expensive cable be used w/o sacrificing performance? The added expenditure of the tiller arm could wash out any savings, but I wonder. If the boat is kept long enough to need another cable, the savings would definitely be significant.

I just had a problem with my '93 Honda's hood release cable not wanting to pull open. I did not want to go through the hassle of running a new cable through the fender and all that. So I disconnected the cable at the hood mechanism and got some clear tubing that would slip over the cable, and then clamped it tight with a clamp. Then I poured some penetrating oil and tranny fluid in the tube, pressurized it with my air chuck while my wife worked the latch from in the car. I repeated the process until the fluid made it all the way to the latch.
It slides smooth as silk now, maybe this would work on the steering cable

I can't comment on your '88 but on my '97 the stroke was the same with the standard vs. the custom. Furthermore, the extra 6" of length with the custom cable was no big deal. Check my other posts for more details.

Up until the late 90's CC used a special cable. Everyone else is correct in saying that it has a longer throw. The type of cable used by these nautiques is the Teleflex rack cable. The 8.5" throw cables (most common type) come in even foot increments, ie. 18', 19' etc. The special cable for nautiques comes in half foot increments, ie. 18.5', 19.5' etc. Any marine dealer that sells Teleflex products should at least be able to order you the cable. To my knowledge, the 2001 used the 18.5 foot cable, and the 90's nautiques used the 19.5.

I can confirm that you can substitute the standard cable, however you will lose some rudder actuation, making your turning radius larger. Last summer, the 19.5 cable was out of stock everywhere, including the manufacturer, so I was forced to buy the 19' cable. It works fine, and it does cost about half as much, but you do lose some turning radius.

Steve, once you pull out the old steering cable DON'T toss it out. I'd like to have/see it. Are there special ends that swagged on the end of the cable? Might be able to get me hands on some cable and could possibly make new ones but just need to know what type of ends they have.
