I have a 1979 Ski Nautique and sometimes it will not restart. Example, taking boat for a ride and then turning off for a swim. After the swim boat will not restart. Some have suggested a possible problem in the throttle area. Is there some kind of switch in the throttle area telling the boat its in gear or not?

Chuck, can you describe in a little more detail what the symptoms are when you are trying to restart? Does it crank over at all? Do you just hear a "click"? Does it "slow crank" or does it turn over fine but just not fire?
I just ran into an issue over the past few outings with my '96. It would start fine at the beginning of the day, run fine, then after shutting down while letting skier in, it would slow-crank then just die, seemed like dead battery issue. Sometimes it would re-fire just fine. It boggled my mind. This saturday I was at my buddies small private lake and it did it in the middle of the lake. I hooked up my spare and it did the same thing. ??? 2 dead batteries? WTF? So he swam in and got his '85 and towed me home. Put both batt's on charger, they were almost full. Stumped we hooked up one battery again and tried starting. bwwaaaaaaa dead. ??? So I propped open the dogbox and wrapped on the starter with a wrench. Turned key and fired right up. Looks like its time for a starter. The weird thing is that the starter didn't display any of the tell-tale signs I've seen before (just a clicking). I don't know if it was heat-sinking or what but I do know it is the original and after 16 years maybe time for replacement. |

Bret,
Open up the starter, clean the commutator and install new brushes. Chuck, If the problem is a no crank, yes, there is a NSS (neutral safety switch) on the trans. It needs to be closed when the trans is in neutral. Remove one of the wires and check it's continuity. Get back to us with more detail. |

Does not turn over at all. Battery good and strong. I think after reading some of the older post, it may be the neutral safty switch.Thanks so much for the reply and help.

Don't go buying the NSS before you check it. All you may need is a shift cable adjustment. Get the meter out.

The neutral lever has a detent. So remove the pivot, and check nss continuity with the lever on the detent. Then with the helm at neutral, adjust the pivot so it slides back on the lever easily, replace cotter pin, snug locking nut on pivot.
