I am currently refurbing an original trailer and have a few questions:

1. Does the type of carpet matter to use on the wooden rails? I have some low pile type carpet and was wondering if that would work?

2. What kind of staples should I use? Brass, ect?

3. Where can I get the riser guides (not sure what they are called) at the back of the boat that helps guide the boat onto the trailer?

4. What are good quality lights and where is the best place to get them?

Thanks.

I'm not the be-all end-all of experts on trailers, but here's what I did.

1. I purchased some carpet made for bunks from West Marine. I'm not sure I'd use just any old carpet lying around. You need carpet that is made to be wet and wont scratch the hull.

2. Stainless staples.

3. You can make some riser guides yourself. Where did yours go? What type of boat/trailer are we talking about?

4. My trailer has sealed lights and I purchased replacements from Six Robblees.

My home depot had bunk carpet and I too used stainless staples. I found that a good truck stop has everykind of trailer light you would want at about the same prices I could find on the internet. I however bought most of my stuff at a local car parts place. www.etrailer.com has a good selection at about the lowest prices I could find as well.

There is a recent post advocating LED lights, I would encourage that route as well. Much brighter, less draw, and all of them are sealed when you buy the whole unit. Good thing for something that spends some time in the water.

Good luck.

I didn't have any guideons on my trailer either, so I drew some up and had them made by a local tube bender. These are for a 1980 Nautique.
