The Chrysler 318 in my '66 Barracuda has no compression in one of the cylinders. If I can't get the valves fixed, or decide to be lazy and not deal with it, does anyone on here know of a 318 that I could purchase? It would need to match up with my current velvet drive. (I imagine they're all pretty much the same?) It is a standard rotation. If I decide to stick with this engine, I still need the thermostat housing on the top of the engine as it is completely rusted through. Also, I may be looking for a few additional parts. Thanks, Jake.

Jake,
Are you sure that 318 is a standard rotation? It should be a reverse unless someone did a repower with a standard. What hand prop is on it? Looking from the aft, the prop will turn clockwise when going forward with a reverse rotation engine. For parts and your T stat housing, try these people Note they have a conversion kit for the early screw in T stat to the new style. |

I should specify. The flywheel spins clockwise. I apologize for any terminology mix-ups. Is that counter rotation? Anyway, I got mine running a little better as of today. But I do need this termostat housing. I looked on the website 75 tique provided. Has lots of good parts that I may need, but I can't find my specific housing. I guess I can't post a picture of the part, but if you visit the thread "'66 Barracuda" in the General Forum, there are pics towards the bottom of the part. From what I understand, it's a pretty rare part. Thanks for all the help! Jake.

8122, I'm not sure if mine is a screw in as you are describing. It is kind of a weird part.

I suggest you call them with all the specs of your engine. They will know.
If you are looking at the flywheel from the aft and it's turning clockwise, then yes, you have a reverse rotation engine. |

Agreed. I was going to call as soon as I can find my phone. Hopefully they will understand which engine I have. Several people have said that it's a weird setup with possibly different parts from a different vintage. And, Okay, thanks for the help.

I forgot to mention that you can make an engine turn in either direction by simple timing set up. Mine was set up to counter rotate. call me at 407-748-7913 mike888

Might want to check your facts here... if the engine spins opposite the intended rotation, you would need at least a cam change, and probably a bunch of other stuff as well. Bottom line is that rotation is engine specific, and making it spin the other direction may be possible, but isn't as simple as a "timing change"... |

Good point, left my brain somewhere today. Cam is original etc. motors' been bored to 30 over. can be cleaned up and should be ok. you will need an oil pan.

Agreed! Then the gear on the distributor/oil pump shaft. Also some engine manufacturers flip pistons so the offset is reversed. Of course there's also the opposite rotation starter. |

The cast oil pans are hard to source...and if found can be a bit pricey. |

Got cast aluminum oil pan if you end up needing one. Got pretty much everything minus the reverse rotation cam and intake manifold in fact.

I'm not sure, but you have an "LA" 318. If silvers is out of a 66, I'm thinking its a Poly. ... not to say you couldnt make it work tho... |

Mine is a Poly from what I understand. I just ordered $250 of headgaskets, intake gaskets, thermostat/housing/hosing etc. The cooling problem was because of completely clogged water jackets in both heads as well as in the block. With new gaskets, and a proper tune up, hopefully it will run good. Thanks for replies, politicallycorrect, if your thermostat housing looks the same as mine, I may end up taking you up on that. Although, if you don't have the manifold, you may not have it.
Thanks a lot, Jake. P.s., I have pictures of my project under "66 Barracuda" in the general forum. |

I've got the housing. I was saving it as a spare but if you need one give me your email and I'll send a pic.
