I had a 72 red beetle in college. I loved that car. Ive been searching for one to restore not looking to hard but one of these days. Around the lake where I live we have the Gilmore car museum, and another car collector The Off Brothers, so you always see some great old cars driving around here.

Peter, I misspent much of my youth on aircooled VW's what do you want to know? Very addictive but like everything else in the world $$$. I have been out of it for 30 years but some of the big players are still around,CB performance and although the man who wrote THE book on VW performance is gone his family still carry on Gene Berg.

i really just bought them to sell . the beetle convert is really solid and a driver , the cmc is fast the slip on the motor shows a company in ohio built it ,dyno tested with a bill for 5600 on the motor , i have seen a lot of motor builds and its hard to believe you could put that much into an air cooled bug engine . explains the quickness i guess . we used to take the bodies off , shorten the pans and build welded black iron pipe roll cages , double up the rear tires its a wonder we are still here .

My brother 's 67 Beetle convertible is for sale on oldbug.com. It is a very nice restoration. I have driven it a little and it gets a lot of attention. He bought a Speedster as a replacement. He really doesn't want to sell it but needs storage for his other cars.

Now days you can build a VW motor with out using any VW parts.
Back when I was messing with them you could easily build one with more hp than any 356 because of the parts that were developed for them. This first pic is the last engine I built in '77- 1850cc,Scat 76mm counterweighted crank, 2 2bbl Weber carbs,Crawford Engineering ported big valve heads, 88mm bore,291 duration 430 lift cam. This was in the white 1970 below, bought for $200 with the original engine in boxes in the back seat. Disc brakes, lowered front, welded close ratio solid mount transaxle. It would lift the front wheels on launch. I built this dunebuggy pickup as a teenager, fun car but very wet I bought a '68 for $50 with no engine and built this out of it and used it for every day,gas heater made it liveable and would go just about everywhere Finally my last, complete but never finished '55 oval window with semaphore turn signals. Mrs really liked this car but by then, '93, I was burnt out working on them. |

Hows about a picture of the speedster. Mine was a "C" theone with flared fenders. My engine was around 1970cc with remote oil filter and some nasty cam, dual webbers,

At 16-- I bought my 69 VW Bug out of a junkyard for $200- It had a good motor but all 4 fenders were smashed and the trunk--the front hood guys, not the hood in the rear covering the motor. The guy said I'm gonna do you a favor--- He GAVE me 4 NEW Fenders and the Trunk and said I wanta see it when you get done! Of course back then New fenders were only about $20 each.
So I took the extra money I had and built the motor---everything bolted on-- up to about 2100 cc's... I could outrun anything on the street The new Mustang 5.0's-- those boys would get so mad at me! I'd bark the tires in 1st,2cd,and 3rd, and just walk off and leave them.. Even took it to Farmington Dragway on weekends and win a few grudge races--- against Camaro's and Chevelle's even. The only problem, was there was so much power I kept popping CV joints. I bet I replaced 20 of them. I painted it Green the 1st time and it was Dubbed as "The GREEN Hornet "... I then painted it- inside and out- a Metalliac Blue. The dash I had Prisim on I kept that Bug until around the 90's and finally let it go I did get 1 speeding ticket in it. I was doing 72 mph in a 35 mph zone. The cop finally caught up with me-- I let him catch me about a block away from the hospital. He wanted to know where I was going so fast- Are you having a Baby or something?! I pointed to my wife,Karen who indeed was pregnant and having contractions- so he said get her on to the hospital and I'll come up there and write the ticket. Well he knocked it down to 46 in a 35, and we went back home. He said wait aren't ya'll having a baby? I told him the Doc said it was false labor Which now you guys know that was just my excuse |
