Hi,
I am currently having my engine and gear box rebuilt and don’t know what colour to paint it, it has just been sand blasted and am not sure what colour to go. I would love some suggestions from you guys. |

All the newer boats (and cars) paint black, If your going to have any chrome on it, then I like black. Other wise, it's ford blue / chevy orange!

Yeah I was thinking black, when I took it out it was a thick black mess with blue underneath.
I thought I might do the gear box a different colour to distinguish the 2 |

A gray or red tranny might look good against a black engine. I don't think the tranny paint needs to be heat resistant. Anybody know for sure? That would open up some interesting possibilities.

Them rocker covers look cool.
I don’t know about Ford blue as I thought the engine was Chevy based but am not 100%. It’s a 454 out of an 80 barefoot. Also do you know if you need to use any special type of paint in the bilge as I am going to give that a quick once over while the engine is out. |

As a die hard Chevy fan PLEASE do not paint the engine ford blue especially if it is a big block.
Any other, just not ford blue. No offince to all the ford guys. If i had a ford engine in my boat i would use ford blue. Jameski, NICE boat. love the engine paint. |

There are two Ford blues, dark blue and light blue, the dark being the older one. And on the cars, if it was HO it was black instead of blue.

Rat motors should be "Chevrolet Racing Orange" to look cool. Add some polished aluminum valve covers and you'll be badass.

I read somewhere that if you paint the Chevy engine Ford blue that it'll make an additional 20 HP, and will pull an additional deep water skier. I also drink a lot of beer from blue cans. However, my vote's with Bob and orange. Makes a strong statement. But you can get just about any color/colour you want from DupliColor and others, so DON'T settle for just what's on the parts store shelf if you want something unique. Look it up online or ask to see the manufacturers' catalog(s).

Hey Brad.....go to diaries on this site, 1991-1995 and there is a 1991 Sport Nautique with interior picutures and a pic of the engine. Mine looks exactly like that without the funky plactic cover over the carb & top of engine....on page 2 a 1992, same exterior as mine and a close-up of engine, also the same.

Thanks, had not thought of looking though the diaries section.
I like the red as it stands out well with the black of the piping. I am still tempted to go with a red, black and chrome. |

Our PCM Ford 351 is done in an outrageous sky blue metallic - it's gonna look good - but the colour is actually from the current Chev model range. I'll see if I can find out which.

I havent done it myself...yet, but have talked to a few guys who have used "regular automotive paint"( I think enamel) on engines. The color pallet is unlimited' as it can be mixed to almost any formula.
Im a die-hard Chevy guy, but am not planning on painting the 283 going in my 1962 the traditional Chevy-orange. Im planning on a "graymarine" type red. I dont remember seeing any "early" boats with the orange? Brad_K,...... A big block!!... Id have to think strongly on the black for any 80s vintage engines...those flamed covers on that nautique are WAY COOL tho!!!!!! Good Luck!!! |
