Can any of you fans out there please give me some information on Ski Tiques? I've got a lead on a 77' for sale for $5K. Haven't gone to see it yet, but wanted to get the specs on the Tiques, as I know more about the Nautiques. What years were they produced, engine displacement/hp/manufacturer, length, any particular year models to avoid, what to look for other than the obvious, ie rotten floors, etc,. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey hspore- I have a 79 tique. I'm no expert by any means but I can tell you mine is 16 ft, has a ford 302 commander engine in it and runs like hell 50+mph. I'm not sure of the horsepower. It's been a great boat - owned in family for over 15 years. Pulled many runs for skiing, tubing, kneeboarding and even some footing. Not much interior space but overall no complaints.

Heath,

I have a 76 and think its a terrific boat. Like convo said, a bit of a hot rod. Built from 76 to 80 or 81, as a 16 foot, 1600 lb boat. Light and powerful.   Took place of 16 foot mustang and skier when they were discontinued. It started out pretty basic (no coming pads, not upholstered engine cover) as the mustang had become more plush as well as larger. I think this was the low cost replacement. In 81 or maybe 82 they enlarged it to 17 ft, apparently the old Nautique molds, but that boat was only around for a year or two. Mine has a chevy 305 OMC conversion, 230 HP and according to the guy I bought it from, outperformed the ford versions. (I'm not biased, I think I actually prefer the fords, but I'm not that particular.) It's good for 50+. Its fast, its fun, its loud, its responsive. Downside: its small. Not a great day/trailer boat, where you have to load all the kids or friends, gear, coolers... and live out of the boat all day. Better if its just you and a couple buddies who want to ski or if you have a place on the water, or a beach to work off of. As far as skiing, great pick up, a pretty significant rooster tail at about 18 to 21 off. At 15 off you are behind it. It has a fin, but I have never run it through a course, so I can't attest to tracking. More wake than a newer nautique, but very good once you reach slalom speed(32+). I can't give an assessment with regard to wakeboarding wakes, because I don't do that. So, that's my 2 cents. I like mine a lot, but they aren't for everyone. (See mine in diaries, misclassified as a 75, as that is what I was told when I bought it) Also note, my side graphics are not factory. The boat was repainted before I got it. Stripe and name were redone, very well, but not stock, more like mustang style than than the larger typical tique style. The boat and engine are still very solid (floors, stringers) and as far as I know all original, so its held up well.

If you are ok with a smaller older boat, I'd go for it.

Heath, can't personally attest to the Ski Tique as ours was purchased upside down on a pair of trestles! It's been out of the water for a long time but a lot of people I work with used to ski behind it and drive it when the previous owner had it. They all raved about it. Ours is the '82 179 (for 17 feet 9 inches with the PCM351 making 240hp). Tracking is said to be excellent, wake perhaps a little hard but flat at slalom speeds and a pretty good wake at low speeds for boarding. Apparently loud and great to drive. I can't wait!
Cheers, Shaughn.
