I have an 1100 lb double-axel steel-channel trailer. That trailer along with my loaded Sport, tips the scales around 4200 lbs. In reading up a bit, SOP appears to be the total of each tires weight rating, plus 20%. Which indicates I need tires rated for 1250 lbs. Am I on the right path? The tires currently on the trailer are rated 1430 lbs, ST 205/75 D 14. Should I go with same? My local time shop gets 75 bucks a piece and has C rated tires. TireRack seems to be a bit more of a premium....Recommendations and comments?
I don't trailer the boat at all, with the exception of pulling in the winter, and putting it back on in the spring. But maybe would do an occasional road trip. Thanks, Ultra |

Your math is fine, and I agree to not exceed 80% of the tires' capacity. The only thing I would advise is that you do some reading on tire manufacturers. Check out the Saltwater boat forums, and the RV forums (those folks trailer long distances) and you'll see trends. Some tires are known to be terrible, others are fairly good.
So the bottom line: make sure you're comparing apples to apples when you look at price. If the trailer really never gets used, the quality factor may not be as critical. |

D's on a tandem sounds like overkill but do do the math.

His original tires were D's. For just a couple bucks more a tire you're getting a stronger sidewall. I'd stick with the D's. |
