could anyone tell me if drilling holes wouuld cause cracking in the gellcoat or is thier any preventive measures you can take?    thanks

put masking tape over what your drilling. start drilling in reverse. bevel the edge of the hole with a bigger bit. thats all i did.

let the drill bit do the work. Don't put all your weight behind it.

The important thing is to bevel the hole. I suggest you go ahead and purchasing a bit made specifically for the purpose. Any hardware or home store should have one. The bits go by many names such as countersinking, flute, chamfer, etc. Basically, they look like a cone on a 1/4" shaft. Do not get the countersink bit for use with plugs.

I do not recommend using a larger drill bit to chamfer the hole because if you forget and do not have the drill in reverse, the larger bit can grab and pull itself deep into the fiberglass before you can react quickly enough and release the trigger. All of a sudden, you have a too large hole that is not chamfered. Running the bit in reverse is just too slow.
