I started my boat today and I heard with sounded like something shorting out on startup. I took a closer look and noticed sparks coming from starter when it turned over. I checked connections and continued to do it. After messing with it problem seemed to get worse and now sometimes just clicks once when I turn key. If i try it a few times it will go. I have a permanent magnent starter that is piggy backed through old solenoid. All my grounds and connections look good. I have read somewhere that the starter grounds itself maybe this could be problem? Any thoughts where I should look next. Also does anyone know if its possible to remove that old solenoid so there isn't 2?

JB, It sounds like it's time to pull the starter check that the bell housing and starter housing are making good contact (that's the ground) and check that your bolts are good and clean. IF the connections are loose, you'll need to tighten them, but do a good job of cleaning them first. The Solenoid is grounded to the starter, so make sure it's good and tight as well, and that the grounding surfaces are all clean. If this doesn't solve the problem, I think you're due for a rebuild. Take it out, run down to the alt/starter rebuild place, and check the price. sometimes a new starter is going to be cheaper than a rebuild. Not sure on the solenoid removal, someone else will have to interpret that part for you. BTW, you need to know the rotation of your engine if you purchase new, or if you get it rebuilt. mark the starter with the direction of rotation, so there is no question when it comes back if it continues to rotate correctly. good luck!
