Hello all I have been lurking here for a while reading and soaking up knowledge. I am picking up our first Nautique tomorrow, It is an 85 2001 in great condidtion. On the back, 2 of the bolts that hold the swim deck bracket to the transom are stripped. What is the best way to repair this?

make sure that it's not a thru bolt where you need to have someone with a wrench on the inside of the boat. If it's a lag bolt then that's a problem.

If its one thing I can't stand its a loose hole, or two........ You can fix if they are lag bolts by either filling them with an epoxy/fiberglass fiber paste and redrill the holes or use the old toothpick/woodshim in the hole trick. I'd prefer the filling and drilling but the latter will do the trick. I'd put some silicone sealer on the bolt before I'd install it in either case.

I have only seen through bolts used at the swim platform brackets. Simply remove the rear seat and look under the tank for the nut. You will need a buddy to hold the wrench while you turn the bolt. However, since the bolt is loose and has been turned, I suggest you remove the boat and re-seal it with Life Boat Caulk or similiar.
BTW, use a nylock nut if one is not present. Or, replace the nylock nut if you suspect it is not doing its job. Must be stainless steel. |

If its a thru-bolt and loose, the boat must take on a fair amount of water..

Not sure about that year boat but the bolts on my 81 swim platform are lag bolts. IF you have room you could drill through and use the Nylok nuts sugessted above or fill the old holes with resin and redrill. I would make sure you clean and dry the holes out before using the resin. Either way stop that leaking now, that water could cause a delam problem over time.

You can’t change the wind but you can adjust your sails

Thanks for the replys guys. I they are lag bolts. I am going to pull the rear seat this weekend to verify. I am not taking on water the deck is just a little soft on the one side when you put weight on it. Looks like I will be filling the hole and redrilling it. Thanks guys.

If it is indeed a lag bolt, I would bore it out and thru bolt. Put the largest washer you can find on the back side or better yet, an aluminum plate.

I just came out from under the floor in my 83 and my platform has thru bolts. I was under there to put the exhaust hose back on.
