Good day to you. Last summer, I inherited a 1976 Ski Nautique with a 351. The boat is in excellent condition, and with the current prop, will easily maintain about 36mph. My question/s revolve around engine maintenance. Specifically, with this first topic thread, I am curious as to what type & viscosity motor oil to use, and which is acceptable. I have read many places that "marine grade" oil is simply "marketing", and that any higher viscosity oil, SL grade or better, motor oil will do just fine. Is this true? What are you folks with older Natiks using? Is synthetic an option, and if so, longer between oil changes? I will stop here, as I have many other questions about maintenance, saving for future posts. Thank you in advance to those of you assisting me.

I use mobile1 15w50 in all my boats The 15w50 has all the additives you need for your flat lifter engine. I do not extend the change intervals as per PCM. I also use only Mobile 1 or K&N oil filters

I assume that the 15w50 is a synthetic? How often do you change?

a lot of guys on here are using Valvoline VR-1 20w-50 racing oil, the oil question has come up a lot and has been the source of much debate. ZDDP is the ingredient you need to be careful with, you need enough of it to lubricate your flat tappet lifters and cam as mentioned above, synthetics are fine, as long as the additives are correct. Mobile 1 is synthetic. you may find some new leaks with synthetic that did not show up using conventional oil though. welcome aboard

Thank you. So, does the Valvoline mentioned have the right balance of ZDDP for my 351? And again, what is the recommended oil change? Annually (with, say, 40 hours of operation per year)? Thanks a million for your expertise!

yes, and approx. 50 hours is normal. or at the end of each season if you don't run that much. there are engine manuals in the ereference section that would help. take a read through the materials there, that will answer a bunch of your questions

Hi Tony, welcome.
Check out the Motor Oil, Oil Filters, Transmission Fluid thread. Also, work your way through the whole CCF FAQ thread. Enjoy! Steve |
