We hit a rock in the middle of the canal we ride in. Laid waste to the prop , and the shaft stabilizer i guess you would call it. Its the thing that keeps the driveshaft from moving up and down. Held in by 4 bolts just forward of the prop. Anyways, im going to order a new prop, and i need to know where to get the screws to put the stabilizer back in, also what type of sealant should i use to put it back in?

I used stainless screws available at any hardware store...seal with 3M 5200. Use large stainless washers in the bilge to distribute the stress.

Great care must be taken here. The strut maybe bent also.Plus when you reattach it,the strut must be running dead center. Not sure about 5200 here as it remains flexable,i always use epoxy thickend with micro fibers, this allows you to get it tightened straight and then it sets up,after that you can retighten on the inside.I would have to assume you bent all 3 pieces.shaft, strut and prop. This is the most critical set up on an inboard so that it slow and get it as close as you can or you;ll have vibration forever, ans if attemted with a bent shaft you;ll never get close to right.

I feel for ya
Good luck Munday

I have heard that you can get them straightened. I would not trust that .I have had 2 shafts made at a machine shop for under a 100 apiece They work great till you hit a log floating down the river wide open

IMHO, there is no need to glue the strut in place. What are you going to do when you need to remove it for what ever reason. I have always used Boat Life Caulk with perfect results.

Tell us again how the strut came off and you lost the bolts? The only way I see that happening is that you now have a big hole in the bottom of your boat. I have seen struts hit hard enough to bend them over at a 20 degree or so angle and remain fast to the bottom of the boat.

If you need new bolts, I believe they are 3/8" SS flat head counter sink bolts (course thread and probably about 3" long).

I recently purchased and restored a wrecked boat that needed ALL the underwater gear replaced and it set me back about $2000.00. I tried to have the strut straightened, but they got the angle incorrect and I ended up buying a new one from CC ($300)...so be wary.

Good luck.

Ok, well im going to use something less permanent also b/c my dad said ill never get the 5200 off. Dude, when he hit the strut he sheared all 4 bolts in half, the top halves were laying in the bilge. They must not have been SS b/c they were pretty rusty. But they broke straight in half.

makes sure the set screws/bolts on the coupler aren't coming loose. That would be the first place to check.

Chris
Do you ever take your boat anywhere other than wawasee? I make my way up to Clear Lake a couple of times a summer, I will be there this summer if I get the shake out! That is where my pictures of my boat were taken at. Maybe we will run into each other on the water someday.

Hey I see you are a product designer, what do you design? I am a graphic designer in Ohio.

Thanks for the help!

I haven't had my boat anywhere else but I don't live there anymore and I'm in the process of re-doing a trailler so that I can take it other places. I'll be at Wawasee this Saturday but I won't be taking my boat I'll be hanging out with all of the brand new 34' Rinkers at the sand bar.

I got a chance to try to figure out my problem and it was the one that I wanted it to be, it was the two bolts on the coupler (I could move them with my fingers) Thanks for the good advice Chris.

Brad you could use a little loct*te Blue thread locker to prevent them from loosening again. While your at it you need to double check the shaft alignment to the engine. Rotate the prop by hand and feel for a a tight or loose spot as you rotate it. If the tension/resistance isn't the same for 360 degrees then you need to adjust the alignment.
