I went through the whole rigamaroll with the overheating problem and had it nailed at 160 with the bucket in the driveway. I finally have it back on the water and with s load on it the gauge is showing around 200 again. Any thoughts on this? I have gone through and tightened al of the hose clamps to make sure I was not sucking air at connections... So frustrated!

Chris,
Overheating at speed can be a T stat problem or blockage. Sucking air on the suction side of the RWP typically shows up at idle. Have you taken an IR reading to confirm the temp?

I took the t-stat out completely and still overheated. I think my exhaust manifolds are corroded and may be the source of the blockage....

Pete not to thread jack here but do you think there are times that the gauges are supposed to read from a ballast resister in the system or just straight 12 volts   i am asking because my corvette usually reads an avg of 165   and if i use any one of 3 different temp scans and remote bulbs to read actual temp i find that the gauge reads higher than it ever has    the only difference is that i removed a ballast resister in the ignition circuit   when it says 210-220 every test i try says its 165 = or take

Peter,
There are older gauges that utilize voltage stabilizers. The S/W gauges in my 64 X55 is an example. The idea is that no matter what the alternator (or generator) is putting out, the gauge still reads the same. The ballast resistor in the ignition circuit should not influence the gauges.

New RWP? What boat do you have? Do you have a dual exhaust? Is the amount of water coming out of each exhaust about the same on the hose?

If it's not coming out equally, what does that mean?

Well, on my 75, it told me one side was putting out much more cooling water than the other, and it turned out to be a clogged output on my starboard riser. I have an Escort marinization, and I was able to get a hack saw blade into the back of the riser output, and knock loose a bunch of scale, which increased the water flow, and cooled the hot riser condition I was having, and seemed to knock 5 degrees off the temp gauge.

Had this problem with my 88. Threw all kinds of parts at it. clamps, hoses, tstats, impellers, o ring seals, sending unit, etc. Checked and tested the RWP and then checked and tested all again. I had an infrared thermometer gauge that I ended up using to confirm that it was not running hot despite what the dash gauge said.

I ordered a replacement temp gauge but ended up selling the boat before installing the gauge to verify the problem.

Frustrating experience.. good luck.

Finally found the issue! I have been so focused on getting cold water into the engine that I overlooked the hot water getting out. The exhaust manifold riser was swollen so bad from corrosion that it was letting a small portion of hot water out of the engine. Two photos, 1 is the old riser and 2. the new riser. Replaced both risers, dunked her in the creek for a test run and she is running like a top! Valuable lesson. Halleluiah...Bourbons up!

Black Creek. I live on the Southside now so ready to explore closer places now that she is running... I'll give Julingtona shot, but not sure outside of that. Are you from Jax?

Ah salt... so tasty, so awful for boats. Congratulations on finding the problem.
