A couple of days ago I ordered breakerless ignition kit, coil, plug wire set, impeller for water pump, and a new acme #540 prop (great help from Skidim, by the way) for my 77 ski nautique. Can't wait! In the meantime, I plan to replace the battery and have gotten various advice on CCAs, Marine or automotive, deep cycle, etc. Would someone please advise the ideal battery for my 351 PMC? No stereo, or additional electrical equipment, just standard set up. Thanks in advance.

I don't have all the answers but I can provide some. for CCA's get something above 600. I think I have 650 or 675 in my '79 SN. Don't get a deep cycle. I can't remember exactly why but there was a good reason and most everyone will tell you to stay away from them.

I use automotive batteries in both my '79 and '02 and haven't had any problems.

I run optima blue tops in both of my boats. They are a little expensive, but you will never have a problem.

a deep cyle is low current over a long period of time, A starter needs high current over a short period of time. Get a 650 or higher CCA battery, choose a DELCO, OPTIMA or DEAKKA brand with a 60 month or better life.

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure I'll have a few more questions once I get my parts and ignition kit. I really appreciate it! P.S. can't wait to get the new prop on....I think I have the original prop on the boat. Should be a world of difference.

Put on the new ignition conversion. Very easy job with good instructions. Also put on the new prop (I think the old one might have been the original). Man, what a difference. The engine starts up right away, hot or cold, idles smoothly, and runs great at all RPMs. The new prop is so smooth, and running along around 2500 RPM and accelerating up to 3600 sets you back in the seat! It's incredible, like having a new boat! As I have read on this forum, electronic ignition and a new prop are the best bucks I've spent! Unbelievable!

Optima Blue & Yellow tops are dual purpose, starting and deep cycle. I've but good things to say about these batteries.
