Carburetor on a 1981 Ski Nautique 351

I have a 1981 Correct Craft with the 351 in it. I took to lake yesterday and it seemed to be running fine until we stopped and swam for a bit then i pulled kids on tube and it seemed to be smothering itself out and wouldnt start back. It did start this morning but then started acting up again then just die. It's the 4160 Holley carb with 4776-7 number on it and 144 under that number. It's not electronic either. I have been leaving it wide open on the flaps to get it to run. Should I buy a new carb from discount marine or try to fix this one. It sit for 9 years at my neighbors and I have went through and put a new trans in it and new coil new autolite 24 plugs new regulator new battery and this is the only thing I havent messed with yet it seems like. Any suggestions would be great. I am not sure if it's original carb or not. There is 2 wires a black and red that tun next to it but are taped up. I was wandering if it may have came with an electronic choke on it. I appreciate your time. Thanks

Tubing is the problem. Get the kids out on skis before they get hurt. A recent suvey of the USCG found that 90% of the accidents behind boats are caused by tubing!! All you are doing by tubing is screwing up the water for others who want to do something requiring talent and is a challenge.

Yes, the 4160 is the correct carb and yes, it can be rebuilt. The red and black wires are for the electric choke. !

First impression is that you have a carburetor problem. Based on your explanation that the boat sat for 9 years, a problem with the carburetor is not unexpected.

1. Rebuild. If you feel mechanically inclined, you can try rebuilding the carb. A rebuild kit can be purchased from several places, including at skidim. You may want to give them a call and give them the carburetor number (found on the air-horn). Vince is a good source of info. Don't forget the base gasket.

2. New Carburetor. If you want to go with a new carburetor, you can go with a new Holley 4160 - also from skidim. There is an alternate option -- that is cheaper and better. QuickFuel Technologies offers a marine carb that you can get at Michigan Motorz. Just ask them for the USCG approved fuel line that will connect your fuel pump to the new QuickFuel M-600 Carb.

Back to your carb.....................it sounds like it is flooding after you warm it up and then shut it off. Verify this by removing the cover/arrestor right after you shut it off. Look down inside and see if it is dripping gas. This will make it hard to start., smell strong gas odor, and may belch fire.
The cure may be a stuck float due to debris, or too much fuel pressure.. I*'ve had both happen. Checking fuel pressure, make sure it's only 2-4 pounds, and use a quality fuel pressure regulator and gauge to make sure it is. Todays gas and 6-10 pounds of fuel pressure will flood these 4160 carbs, even a new one out of the box (personal experience)
I hope you read this and follow up on it, I learned this by trial and error over several frustrating months..

The choke not being wired could definitely be an issue. If it isn't hooked up, it isn't opening properly and could be causing issues. Or the boosters are dripping like previously mentioned which a rebuild will easily fix. If it sat for that long, a rebuild wouldn't hurt anyway.
My concern is you have no idea if it's even the original carb. If that is the case someone could have put an automotive carb on it and disconnected the choke in the process. If that is indeed the case, you'll want to replace it with a correct marine carb.

Post some pics if you can.

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

Yes, pictures!

Some googling suggest list 4776 is a 4150 600 DP with auto applications, so very good chance this carb is not marine spec and a liability to both safety and proper operation.

I've had good luck talking with Holley direct. They can verify date and exact application with the numbers.

While on the phone, a fresh hard line from pump to carb may be in order as well. Fresh 1901 fel pro gaskets. too
