I have located a 1958 16'' Star-Flite in rough, but restorable condition. Are there company records available that document how many boats of this model were produced? Also,
this boat came equipped with a six, but it was replaced with a V-8 at some point in its life. Anybody know what make/model of engine and transmission would have come original with the boat? |

Joe,
Welcome to CCfan. Take a look in the reference section under manuals. I believe there's a 58 price sheet that will indicate the available engines. Company records are slim to non existent due to a factory fire. Are you planning on a restoration? Is all the hardware there? |

That's one fine lookin starflite deluxe. Definitely looks worthy of resto from what can be seen in the pics. My father and I retrived a 59 starflite from New Hampshire which is awaiting resto. Ours has the amc 327. We love pics so keep us posted!! Burton |

Great to have found some folks who are familiar with these great little boats. The only pictures I have seen on the internet show the outside of the boat. Would someone share some pictures of the interior of their Star-Flite?
Thanks! Joe L |

Joe,
The Star Flight you found a picture of comes up in this thread It's hard to tell the length but I'd say it's a longer model due to it having a V8. I looked through the ACBS directory under boats names with "Fins" and there are 2 boats but, nether are a Star Flight. If you aren't an ACBS member, join your local chapter. Lot's of valuable help and information. |

The boat in the picture was at the Seattle Boat Show. Believe that picture was taken by Brien Franchini. FINS on this site. Our Starflite is a 16 ft. and it came with the 327 AMC so you can find em out there with V8's in the shorter length. Not to much room for the feet rear seat. Our Atom Skier is similar with less beam. Things get really tight between the gunnels and the dog house.

Brian (fins) hasn't been with us for a year. I did look through his posts and really didn't find anything with the exception of his Atom. I sent Brian a PM and we'll see if he responds. It would be great to hear from him again.

I too am a ACBS member and have contacted several ACBS members. I really appreciate all the info you folks have provided thus far. I have found a trailer for the boat and hope to get it off the hay wagon and onto a trailer in the next week or two. Need to get it done before it turns cold and snow flies here in Minnesota!

This Star-Flite began its life with a flathead six. Based on your posts, it was likely a Gray Marine engine. An owner replaced the six with a V-8.at some point. That engine was poorly winterized, cracking the block according to the owner, so the boat will need a replacement engine as part of restoration.
Question; Which way would you go - restore to "original" with a Gray Marine six OR go for fun & performance and find another V-8 ? |

Go for fun and find a V8 that would have been offered for that boat.

The boat is quite heavy. I'd go with the 8 I think however that said there were and are many wood clad boats out there with the straight six and the engine is a nice match as well. The y blocks seem to be the most popular but not easy to find these days. Same holds true for the AMC 327. Both of these engines were offered in that boat so would be acceptable replacements without upsetting the folks that want so bad to judge your boat someday.. I was able to buy a AMC 327 last year on Ebay that was of the same vintage. Bet you can find one as well if you look around.

Joe, I totally agree with Jack. Since the sites remake, I can't make out the price sheet in the reference section (because it's so small - Keith's working on it) showing the available engines for the 16', but if ether the Y or the AMC were available go for it. If the day ever comes where you are in a situation for the boat to be judged, not having the original but was an engine available, it would only be a 1 point deduction. When searching, do keep in mind that you will need a RR. How bad was the 327 damaged? Consider finding a block. |

Joe,
I just took a look at the 58 16' brochure again along with a magnifying glass! Looks like "up to 225 HP" was available so go for the 8. While you are putting in all the hours on the boat, you will have plenty of time to look for the engine! |

Pete, just curious but how do you tell when judging if the engine is original as opposed to an optional one?

Gary,
Documentation in "black and white" such as hull ID plates (most will have the engine serial #) or a build sheet are always best. Original bill of sales also show up. Beyond that it can be a judges call but there are other clues. Checking for other mounting holes in the stringers is a obvious one and then seeing if the engine build date matches the hull date is another. |

Honestly, you can never be sure unless you have the build sheet which is not to often the case. Often times engines were bought up ahead of time or not used up in a calendar year. These went into the next year or previous whatever the case may be. Correct Craft lost most documentation before 1962 I believe so not to easy to research. We believe our AMC 327/ 225 HP engine to be the original to the boat. If I remember, I looked up the serial # in the Gray Marinization log of dates of manufacture and it came up one year difference. The AMC's are not everyones choice but I have been pleased with mine in the Atom Skier.

I guess I was thinking our more modern boats with the professional looking aluminum serial plates held on with no tamper roofing nails

Lots of good discussion about which way to go with engine replacement. I like the idea of restoring the boat consistent with the original model, but I am not hung up putting in a six just because this boat came with a six.
The V-8 that was in there was definitely not an AMC, so it makes sense to look for an engine and transmission like one originally offered.... Thanks for all good feedback.! Joe L. |
