76 mustang will not turn over

Help. Battery is fully charged, all connections have been cleaned and any that were questionable have been changed. Nothing, not even a click. not even when i start it in gear to get to turn first.   I have owned and restored this boat for the past twenty years and i am at my end with it. Anyone have any ideas before i shoot a hole in it and sink it. Thank you for your help it is always greatly appreciated

Don't get this. How can you start it in gear?

Do you have a voltmeter?    That would find out where the electricity stops, then you will know where the problem is.

As Chris mentioned, get the VOM out and do some checking to see why you're not getting the volts to the start relay.

John,
When you are checking why you aren't getting the engine to turn over, there is one thing that's missing in the wiring diagram. That the NSS (neutral safety switch). They are between the key ignition switch and the coil input on the start relay. It must be closed when in neutral. It's there to prevent cranking unless the trans is in neutral.

Hello folk. Thank you for all the help. Found problem   It is the neutral safety switch on trany. Connected two wire and it fired right up. Can anyone direct me wher I can get a new one for a velvet drive model as1 71c?   Also in my diagnosis I changed out starter solinoid. Now after it starts starter keeps cranking over, solinoid is stuck in closed position right? Would love to send pics but it won't work for me. Please advise.

John,
It's great you found the problem. After you confirm the NSS is in fact bad, try Skidim if a new one is needed.

Start relays will weld their contacts together and the typical cause is a bad battery. Low voltage - high amps. (Ohms law). Have your battery load tested as it sounds like it did the job on your new start relay. Do not use a deep cycle. An automotive starting is great. Also make sure your battery posts and cable terminals are clean. Use a wire type terminal cleaner.

Foe pictures, use the "post reply" and not the quick found at the bottom of each thread. Click on the icon of the tree with the up arrow. A browse box will come up allowing you to post anything off your computer.

Some might be against this, but you can just bypass the neutral safety switch, just have to be extra careful and if you let anyone drive the boat be sure to tell them.

Irresponsible to be promoting that action.
If anyone finds a 20 dollar part worth the risk of consequences, maybe boating is not for them.

I suggest editing your post adding bypassing is for testing only. For the most part, members will know the danger involved but someone may come along not realizing the risk.

Remove the switch and try to determine why it failed. IF the switch contacts "make" when the plunger is out then it may be a case of a sticking plunger. IF it makes when it is depressed then the contacts may be shot. You have to take it out anyway. May not have to buy a new one. As Pete would say "don't throw parts at it".
Keep it as original as YOU want it
