I just bought a 1997 Nautique Super Sport and the steering is so tight it takes both hands to turn the steering Wheel. I would like to ask if this is normal or do I have a problem and if so what could it be?
thanks John Coyle |

Definitely not normal. I would disconnect the steering cable from the rudder and see if the wheel is easy to turn by hand. Try the rudder by hand also. If the steering wheel moves freely, drop the rudder and clean up the shaft. More likely, the wheel will still be difficult to move and you need a new cable.

I just had the same problem on my 96 sport. My problem was in the tilt column, just need some cleaning and retightening of the u joint assembly. Check your rudder as above then diconnect the cable from the helm unit and try the wheel again. this will isolate the problem area. Once corrected I could spin the wheel lock to lock with a flip of the finger. good luck!
