I had a tractor trailer spare rolling upright straight at me (HW you probably drive by this stretch--on RT 53 South just before 62 exit) which I just did a lane change and avoided but the guy behind me took it square to the center grille. It made a divot about a foot to two feet straight through the radiator and bounced back and off the side of the road as the poor guy slowly pulled over to the shoulder. I had seriously mixed emotions for a few seconds. Joy and sympathy fought a pitched battle until relief won out.

A semi's trailer wheel came off just in front of me, It missed & rolled into the field. Gives me the heebie jeebies every time I think about that close call.
Edit - as opposed to all the other close calls! |

Stuff happens. The bike rider ought to thank God and get rid of the bike and buy a boat. Weird phenomenon how watching the object draws him to it.

With all the people that just don't have a clue how to secure a load you really have to be on the defense. Ever get behind the guy with mattress tied to roof with 2 pieces of cheap twine holding it down in the fast lane 45 mph with his hazards on? Hazard being the key word there! With 2+ million miles on the road just when you think you have seen it all someone comes up with something bizarre.

It would be nice if people strapped their stuff better or had more courtesy but the bottom line is you cannot control their actions, only yours.
I know lots of people that seem to mysteriously find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time time and time again.... Hmm, maybe it's you not them. |

I think I tried to meet that guy one time to buy a prop from him (how many sport nautique can their be in Menominee, WI. Our calls got crossed and the meet didn't happen and I never got up that way again. But I agree lots of questionable decisions all around on this one. Glad no one got killed, that is a miracle.

Hate to see a rider get his experience that way but with that little time on a motorcycle should not be on interstate following that close. Reaction time painfully slow. Been riding 40+ years and still a bit nervous on interstate when riding alone.Always assume that's going to fall off,the guy behind you isn't paying attention on and on.

Used to always strap a blow up doll in the drivers seat of the boat when traveling, never lost her once though I think there were times she wanted to jump, guess my knots were too good.

Yeah, as its been said, lots going wrong here on both the Boat owner and the motorcycle rider. The "young " 20 year old was obviously very new to bike ownership, just buying his riding gear an hour earlier, and having no skills at all on crash avoidance etc. he could have saved himself big time, but panicked.... Never even attempted to brake correctly or get to the shoulder. Lucky kid !!!

Glad to see the boat owner came forward. The rookie motorcyclist said this: “I didn’t want to just swerve and possibly hit a car and get run over so I tried to get to the furthest part of the right of my lane,” said Jankowski. “I checked to see if the [next] lane was clear, and you know the rest.” You should always have an escape route when riding a bike when things begin to look sketchy. His should have been to the left, so as not to be concerned with going into other lanes with motor vehicles. This is a lesson I was taught way back in the day when I got my first bike and took my riding classes. I'm sure he learned a lot from this experience and will be riding safer for years to come. |

I worked with a guy who's son hit a deer on his bike. The car behind him is what did him in,this guy was very lucky especially with all that traffic.

That is it? I must have watched it 45 times... and yeah, I feel bad for the kid. Few years ago, some tree service guys lost their tree shredder (weren't using safety chains) and killed an entire family. Still... you can count to 5 Mississippi from the time the mat touches the pavement until Evil makes contact. His brake like comes on... but doesn't appear to shed any speed. |

Would have been awesome if he'd have powered through it an landed it. Wonder how long it took the EMT's to paper scissors rock that thing into somebody's collection of valuable road debris.

My comment about the trailer being in the left lane has little bearing on why the accident happened but once he passed the dash cam car he had plenty of time to move right and get out of the way of faster traffic. Right up until the video stops he is still in the left lane and makes no indication of moving over.
Left lane is for overtaking, pass and get back to the right so faster traffic can get by. Basic rules of the road. |

I watched it 4-5 times. I used to ride a bit, and I know that at 60 mph tossing a bike around to avoid flying objects probably wasn't my forte. It isn't just "which way does the ***************g mat sail?" it's also which cars are in which lanes, is someone coming up behind me, etc. I watch that guy do 8 barrel rolls on pavement and have nothing but sympathy for him.

Clearly it's the tow vehicle's fault. I think many of us are saying this wasn't terribly hard to avoid though...

Seemed fine to me that the tow vehicle was in the left lane. I also am not sure the motorcycle was too close, the perspective from the dash cam is hard to judge. Maybe as a new rider the guy was going too fast, but I don't have perspective on that either since I don't know how fast the dash cam car was going.
All in all, I have a hard time blaming the bike rider for this. He has a quick split second to decide where to go, even experienced riders can guess wrong with a flying object in front of you. To me it's 100% the fault of the idiot tying crap to his platform. I'm another one that checks 10-15 minutes into the tow to double check all is secure. |

He has plenty of time to go left instead of right if he'd been studying the thing coming his way. He was smart enough to be wearing a helmet. I give him 1 star for that move.
I am waiting for someone to notify us all of the boat puller to get caught. |

+1 on stop 10 mins into journey from lake etc to double check everything! Takes a minute to stop and check everything.
The strap on ports side came loose from wind... He was overtaking the vehicle recording event so no problem with him in the left lane... That biker was dumb for: - wearing shorts - following so close behind - not reacting correctly once he saw the float mat fall off platform - jumping like a lazy wuss!!! sitting on his but... Obviously a lousy rookie rider! Like Paul said... idiots keeping emergency response people busy and fully employed! |

LOL...we could only hope CQ. A moron like that would just laugh it off and never realize that he's the one being targeted out on social media. I'm sure he had tubes stuffed under the cover and was totally proud of himself he found another option for the floatie. |

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.
