Hey all, my daughter, Darby, has flown the coop and is now down at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. When up here she was a little timid at slalom, but now at school with a ski club and a coach, she has just started to ski the course.

She is complaining to me that the ski she is using is older than she is. So, I am thinking about getting her a ski for Christmas. But she wants to be able to try something as she isn't sure exactly what she wants.

I have been thinking of something like a Radar Lyric or Senate, 65". She is 5'2", 125ish pounds and done growing, so hoping this ski will last her through some good years of the skiing the course and some club level competition.

Suggestions for a ski? Does anybody know a Radar dealer down there that would let her demo a ski? Or does anybody have one that she could try? Or is something like a Senate a strong enough ski to just buy without riding it?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Doug

You are on the right track about trying before buying for sure, but finding a shop to do a demo in Atlanta getting into the off season will be difficult. Performance Ski N Surf in Orlando seems to be one of the spots that people get this done and they are a site sponsor of places like www.ballofSpray.com (forum) for a discount. You may also want to go to that site for some advice on skis and such. You will also get some help here.

Right now the new models are coming out so you can pick up the old 2016 and 2015 and older at great discounts. I am amazed everyday at Ski it again dot com the number of new ski each day that are going up for sale that are deeply discounted that are new older models that dealers are moving out of inventory. You can get two year old technology a great discount. Most do not have bindings, but some of these dealers will also add those for you also at a discount.   Bottom line is do not pay full price on a 2017.

Did she have an opportunity to borrow or ski any of her teammate's skis at GA Tech's Club? That is another way to try out a type of ski. Also, check out Coble's Ski School in North Carolina. April Coble Eller has a Ski School and in the off season she sells off demo equipment and Master Craft boats at deep discounts. She also has a full blown pro-shop and would be a place where you and your daughter could go and demo and purchase a NEW ski or possibly a demo ski. They are 30 minutes south of Raleigh NC in Lillington, NC.

I just picked me up a ski from the Badin Lake Mini and I was able to demo it and to get some skiing and course driving tips along with it. Plus, food, a place to stay and all of the booze I could drink . You can't beat that deal.

Congrats on your daughter going to GA Tech, that is a difficult school to get into from what I have been told, she must be bright. Congrats and having a course skier. My 15 year old is one too and I am soooooooooooooo happy about it. I am proud to say my daughter is a ball chaser.

My daughter, ski's a 65" HO , and is just a little lighter than your daughter, but I think the 65" is in the ball park for what you are looking for.

Good luck with your search.

Great to hear of a baller in the making! My advice to you, come down to Orlando for a long weekend if that were possible. Get some winter time skiing in, father and daughter, Perf ski here with nearly every ski made in stock ready to demo and there's plenty of coaches to help you out.

From my understanding HO has a mail order demo program which is almost free to you. I found HO skis to be hit and miss. D3 also does a mail order demo program but theirs can get a bit more pricy. I myself find D3's to be an easy ski to run.. Another ski I find fool proof to ski is Mapple, good luck demoing those. I must've been the only person to have trouble getting the Senate to work, it was always a slow ski but i had the Alloy and never ridden one of their snappier versions. The Senate seems to make many others happy and Matt Rini, one of the Senate's designers is here in Orlando coaching.

Ski It Again is the place to go for a used ski. I'll be listing a 65.5" Mapple T1 there this week.
