I attended the Utah Boat Show today and there was only one direct-drive boat -- a Malibu Response TXI

No Ski Nautique, no Prostar, no Carbon Pro. Just one Malibu. Last year there were 3 direct drives. This year, only one. The Response had a pretty good crowd around it most of the night, so there appeared to be some interest from the boat show public.

It seemed like over half the boats on display were V-drives of one flavor or another. Even Sea-Ray had a V-drive on display. That caused me to do a double-take.

The prices on the big wake/surf boats is also climbing. Some were flirting with $200K.

I'm a dying breed. I think I'll take my wooly mammoth out for a walk now.

No doubt a dying breed. Here in Orlando the only DD I've seen at the show in 10+ years has been the Prostar. I don't bother going now. I've never seen a Response nor a Carbon Pro ever. But waterskiing is a dying breed too so it makes sense. Nobody wants to have the skill, discipline and energy it takes to round some buoys.

We ski and wakeboard and in the past I least felt like there were trying to attract/promote wakeboarding. This year at the boat show even wakeboarding is taking a back seat to surfing.

I don't event waste the money going to the boat shows anymore. I grew up going every year with my dad and I was always excited to see the CC's and Hydrodynes. Now it's 600hp pontoons, surf boats the size of a house, and tubes in the pro-shops. I'd rather spend the money going to see a local ski show or attending a CC reunion.

There was not a new Ski Nautique on display here at the Atlanta Boat Show last month.
Asked the Nautique factory rep why?
He said their entire 2017 production of Ski Nautiques is sold out!
Guess they are just not a "boat show" item these days.

The people looking to buy a DD ski boat know where to find them.

Boat shows are just entertainment for the masses. I bet there were plenty if 18' IOs there.

Lots of bling boats. And big, wave throwing, surf tugs.
Moorfoot got a picture of "best of show"........big Manitou tri-toon. Metallic, iridescent custom paint job, matching radar arch; rigged with twin Evenrude 300 or 350 HP outboards. Show special price of $199,000
The factory rep said that if it did not sell here in Atlanta he could sell it in Chicago!

Exactly. Not only do they know where to find DDs but they buy new ones nearly every year. I would not use the boat show as any type of bellweather for DD sales health nor watersport participation trends. I wouldn't want 40 boats showing up at the slalom course at 6AM anyway!

Downunder I feel the huge boarding and surfing fad is on the wane. Slalom and barefooting is maybe gaining but a bit early to call yet. Tubing is as popular as ever

Everyone knows that you simply "must" buy a $150-200k surf boat for your kids to tube behind. Why bother actually encourage them to undertake a skill sport like slalom skiing. In this manner you will surely enable the entitlement attitude that is rampant.

Why I joined a private lake for course skiing.
