Recently finished the restoration of my 1988 Ski Nautique. I couldn’t have done it without the help that has been posted on this forum. Thanks to everyone who posted their fixes! I figured I would post a summary and cost to help with anyone else wanting to do the same.
replace stringers re-foam floor glass over foam floor (supply from U.S. Composites (very knowledgeable team and offered a lot of advice!)) re-upholster (great job done by Perfect Stitch Upholstery, Salt Lake City, UT for about the same cost of a skin kit i would of had to do myself) carb rebuild new ignition new wiring New GPS Perfect Pass system (great upgrade!) JL audio speakers, sub, amp. (because you can't beat good music on a good boat!) larger battery box for 2nd battery gelcoat restoration (Chapman boat repair out of Boise ID did a great job of making the boat look like new) new decals re-finish teak trailer rebuild (breaks, axle, runners..) The goal was to complete the work within 1 year and under $15,000. Didn't quite hit the goal but close enough for me. Started Feb 2016, completed April 2017. $16,220 total |

I took lots of measurements before removing the old stringers with pictures so i could replicate the old ones. it payed off in the end as the old stringers were too rotten to be used as templates.

Here is the stringers and foam floor. 3 layers of 1708 biaxial glass (12" wide strips with polyester resin) over stringers. 4 lb closed cell foam.
Also in this picture you can see a mistake i made while pouring the foam. I didnt make the floor wide enough at the front of the engine compartment to be covered by the engine cover (always measure twice and cut once.) in the next picture you can see the fix I had to do to widen the floor in this area. |

Here is the finished floor. again it is 3 layers of 1708 biaxial (36" wide role) with polyester resin. I overlapped the hull by about 2" to make a good connection to the hull.
I also did not replace the fiberglass in front of the battery box. I could see some rotten wood that was used to form the ventilation box, however there is no structural support in this area. all of the stringers (the structural support) end at the front of the battery box. I also took the opportunity to make a larger battery box at this time to accommodate 2 batteries (i don't trust just one battery on the water.....) |

Engine install and prop shaft alignment...
TIP.. after a couple attempts and still not getting the prop shaft to properly align. I ended up removing the prop strut and re installing it with 5200 marine adhesive and allowing the strut to "self align" (it must have been tweaked over the years.) After I did this I could finally get the shaft to align and rotate smoothly. |

Sweet!!
How many weeks of summer you get there in Elko? 2?! Never forget having to land in Elko on a flight from Reno to Cincinnati, dropping off 3 and picking up 1, getting stuck "de-icing" and missing my connection. Will be out there in June. |

Looks good, grew up skiing behind a 88 2001. Enjoyed that boat for many years.

What lake is that in your picture? South Fork Reservoir? Is it near Elko? You ever get 200 miles east into SLC? If so, give me a shout. JQ |
