What is the proper drip rate for the Gore-Tex GFO shaft packing? I've only used the flax packing before and I just installed a new drive shaft and used Gore-Tex packing. On the lake today I adjusted the gland nut to get approximately 1 drip every 15 to 20 seconds. Is that too much? Too little?

JQ,
Run the boat some more to allow the packing to seat. Then tighten the gland slightly by hand if you can. Make sure the gland and shaft aren't getting hot. The GFO is "virtually" dripless but water is still needed. I feel getting it down to a drip every minute is possible. |

I agree with Pete, use heat as the variable to adjust to.

How many of y'all replace the safety wire on your packing gland nut after tightening?

Older glands don't even have the holes for safety wire.
