Hey guys, I have just gotten a 1961 Correct Craft inboard/outboard boat, it has an interceptor engine with Easton out drive. I am having a hard time finding information on the boat. The reason I want help identifying the boat because I cannot find any boats with my same seat set up but the 1961's. The 1961 that have the seat set up has decking that doesn't match the decking on my boat. Attached are pictures of my boat. Thank you in advance for the help!

Joe,
How long is the boat? Not exactly a 61 Panther but close! Still, could be a Panther since back then there were plenty of variables with CC's boats. The length may give us a better idea. Can you find a model/serial tag? It would start with some letters indicating the model and the serial #. |

I am fresh to the boat scene, as of yet I haven't been able to find anything with a serial number. Although, I really don't know where to look. The boat is 15 foot 8 inches.

Then it's got to be the I/O version of a Compact Skier. See the Eaton I/O option at the bottom of the engine listing. The ID tag may be next to the engine attached to a stringer. |

The front deck routing is the same as my 1960 Atom Skier. Without measuring I'd say the length is similar also. Very unique.

I thought about the compact skier. I just can't find any photos to verify. The HIN I have not yet found, I have checked all over the engine area, I saw some people on this forum say to check the hull and I found nothing. Since it was before 1972 would it still have a HIN? Also, I have a title but it says it's homemade boat. I don't know if it was restored and they had not title. I am sure it's not homemade. Also, the decking is exactly the same as the 1960 but I couldn't find the inboard/outboard.

Looks just like that one on ebay. Serial number will be on either a plain aluminum tag on a stringer or an elaborate 3x5" approx tag that also advises what oil to use. Somewhere someone must have pictures of these tags.

Keep in mind some models were badged the same even though they were available in different flavors of propulsion, IO, DD etc.

With the hin would the boat have it on it since it was before 1972? This maybe a stupid question

Pull the back seat upright out and there may be a number stamped into the wood cross member. If so it will be a Letter indicating Model, 3 digit production # and the 2 digits for the year.

Yes, it's the bent piece that's mounted in the center deck/bulkhead. That's where you attach rope(s) to pull skiers. |

On my 1964 the serial numbers are on the seat frames like Alan mentioned, be sure and check the bases as well.

Joe,
Two of the knobs would be for the choke and running lights. The 3rd may be for a bilge pump IF a PO added one. Is there a pump in the bilge? There also will be the keyed ignition switch and then a starter button if the ignition switch isn't a 3 position. |

Do you guys have any tips on restoring this. Or a place to get parts other than eBay?

Joe,
The start to any wood boat restoration is to strip all hardware, engine, trans, etc. Anything that isn't wood needs to come off. This will also aid flipping the hull for bottom work. I suggest starting there first. Any boat is worthless unless it has a good bottom. One thing of key importance is how CC constructed their ply hulls. They used a bedding compound between all the frames and ply skin that over the years dries out. This leaves nothing but screws holding the ply on. Removing all ply may be needed so it can be re bedded with a modern adhesive/sealant like 3M 5200. Removing the ply will also give you a better opportunity to inspect the frames and do any repair on them. Ply gussets at the knees, keel and stem are a common problem since the same bedding compound was used on them. Keep the pictures coming and your progress posted. |

Will do a little info on how I got the boat. I found it on craiglist the older gentlemen who owned it had a 4000 square foot climate controlled warehouse full of antiques. Model t's and old oaklands but he got the boat 20 years ago and it had sat in the warehouse since. There is no rot, on the inside of the hull coated with what looks like a blue eopoxy paint. The bottom has been fiberglassed, He started it up for me.. The carb needs to be rebuit. Other than that all I can find is stripping and an engine tune up.

Joe,
Rot may be hidden. The typical spot would be low between the transom frame and the ply skin. That especially with an I/O is the low spot in the hull. Both the bilge coated with epoxy and especially the glassed bottom is the "kiss of death" for a wood boat. Both trap moisture. A thin layer of glass over a wood hull that does have movement isn't strong enough so it cracks. Sorry to say but from the first pictures you posted showing that hardware wasn't removed before stripping varnish/stain told me an amateur has been at it!! |
