    Posted: June-16-2017 at 2:05pm
Hello CCfan,

I'm looking at a 94 Excel which has a title but it's trailer does not. The boat is 2.5 hours away and the current owner has never been able to find VIN on the trailer. I've searched on this forum and others and from what I can find, the VIN may be stamped on the brake actuator and/or a tag on the underside of the trailer and/or a 4 or 5 digit code on the prop guard.

The trailer looks like a 94 Ramlin that has been repainted with some fresh "nautique" decals in the area where the original "nautique excel" decals/paint would be. I've asked the current owner to look in these places for the VIN or code, is there another location on the trailer to search for the VIN/code?

thanks,
Patrick

The vin decal would be on the right side trailer about two feet from the bow stop. When looking at the bow. Would be silver in color. I have owned 5 or 6 excel/BFN's and they are all in the same spot. If it is gone then you can lay on the ground under the boat and look for the back-up decals they installed back then. They are in several places usually. On one of my trailers I found 5. Sadly the back up decals bleach out and are almost impossible to read. I used a black light flashlight and you may be able to read them if you find them. Hope that helps.

Excel Trailer VINs are in 2 places - On the silver manufacturers stamped sticker on the INSIDE of the driver's side of the trailer A-Frame just astern of the Bow stop. If the stamp is faded and illegible, ghosting images can be made out with a bright light or black light - surprising but true.

The second place is a shot in the dark but possible. There is a paper tag under the trailer passenger-side step pad edge rail (rear of the wheel) near the light. If this is dirty, wipe with a DRY finger to see numbers - DO NOT wet as it will disintegrate. It has been there on 3 Excel trailers that I could not find the VIN on on the A frame (no one paints the underside of the step rail).

If that doesn't work, call me. I might have a workaround.

Marty - look at this in above post:   .................. It has been there on 3 Excel trailers that I could not find the VIN on the A frame (no one PAINTS the underside of the step rail).

Why can't the internet be a friendlier place?....There seems to be enough emojis for it.

It might be a Correct Craft made trailer not Ram-Lin.

If it is a correct craft trailer, would the VIN be in a different place?

I was under the impression that 93 and newer correct crafts/nautiques didn't have wood stringers but it sounds like the 94 Excels possibly still have wood?

I have seen the Correct Craft Trailers stamped on the axel. I guess it could be a Correct Craft trailer if it were an older trailer than the boat. Some states do not require trailer titles so it could of been titled later with a different year than the actual build.

Ramlin didn't take over trailer production until at least 1995, IIRC.

We don't paint the underside of trailers now?

Seen 2 that weren't (re)sprayed there ...... and one of those was sprayed OVER the VIN label - argh. Kinda crazy, right?

I think all this is a moot point as Patrick is looking for a fiberglass stringered Excel.

yes ... a wood free stringer Excel is what I thought the 94's were but both Steve and Rod have stated that Excel's never made it to wood-free like the ski and sports' did in 93.

Is there any way to have the current owner check for wood in the 94 Excel?   Maybe this is a unicorn wood free Excel

If ya call me I can tell you some fun facts about those boats. I have cut two of them up for the dump. Not saying I'm an expert- but I have lots of experience with these boats.😀

Patrick:
We have not had anyone cut into a '94 and publicly comment that it was wood. But we have had folks cut into '93s and find wooden stringers.

It makes sense as the promo literature says the all fiberglass construction is new on the Ski and Sport Nautiques in '93 and on (doesn't mention Excel hulls), IIRC. The Excels were being phased out to be replaced by the Super Sport model.

The way these were built, delamination (disbonding) was more of an issue than rot on the Excel hulls. If you can tap a solid (not disbonded) stringer (not on the cradle), these boats do well.... but Rod is the Excel "Jack the Ripper" - He can comment more.

When and who squatted the boat lower in between the wheels? Wasn't that Ramlin who started that in 1993....Maybe 1994?

Lord Wood, I was asking a more specific question. As I wasn't sure if CC started the squat or if Ramlin did. And I seem to recall squat started before 95.

Edit- According to 1993 brochure the squat started then. I often referred to the lower trailer as Ramlin only but evidently CC started that.

Rod, do you happen to have any pictures of the stringer layout in an Excel you've cut up? I've had no problems with mine but I've always been curious.
