Have a 1994 Sport Nautique and a 1989 Ski Nautique. Both run at 160 degrees. I was told that was to hot, and that 140 was what it should be. Is that correct???

Many will say 140 for carburetor boats and 160 for EFI boats. My carb boat has a 160 thermostat.

The person that told me has a 1994 . His done run at 140.
I'm fine with mine at 160. He just keeps telling me my impeller is going bad. Mike |

Agreed! Takes 5 minutes to prove him wrong, pull the cover and look. Gauges are inaccurate anyway. Shoot the sender with an IR thermometer and see. Or just ignore it. Mine reads 155 and shoots 143

Usually carb boats have a 143 degree thermostat in them and efi boats run a 160.
143 always runs 145-160 degrees on the gauge and the 160 runs 160-175. As the gauges and wiring age they become slightly inaccurate. Doesn't sound like anything is amiss on either boat as long as temp stays steady. |

I read years ago that Marine engines were held to 140 degrees to help slow corrosion inside the block. I believe it was mostly for salt water engines but all marine engines were given the 140 stat. FI engines perform better at 160 so a new temp was introduced.
I have not heard of any corrosion issues at 160 and they have been out over 20 years now. |

A 140 t-stat yields a 160 outlet temp because the t-stat bypass allows some raw water to mix with the recirculating hot water from the circulation pump.
