When trying to teach the kids to ski last week the biggest difficulty was the buoyancy of the o'brien fiberglass combos I have. Most of these kids did not even swim, so they were getting used to floating with life jackets while trying to control the skis. It made me really want some less buoyant skis.
Are wood combos less buoyant than fiberglass? If so, I think I will keep an eye out for a good used pair. |

Richard,
Ski buoyancy for the beginner can be a struggle. When the trainee is fighting it, I've found they aren't bending their knees enough. They need to be squatting more in the starting position. In their minds, they are picturing someone behind the boat with their legs almost in the full upright position. Tell them they need to be almost sitting on the tails of the skis. |

Teaching kids to ski before they know how to swim? Seriously?

Yes seriously. There were not my kids. These were kids from the projects who may never learn how to swim or get to a lake again. They all had correctly fitted life jackets on before being allowed near the lake. They were going to be on a tube with the other boat whether I was there or not. So, yes, I taught several to ski and kneeboard. Should I not have?

Richard,
I compliment you in your efforts to get those kids out on the water. |

Good job Richard...I've volunteered with Kristi Overton Johnson's In His Wakes Ministry before and have had the same experience. Pretty neat experience to say the least. Same situation as a lot of those kids didn't know how to swim but were brave enough to try and get up on a kneeboard. +1 on what Pete said. Key is to try and get the skier relaxed in the water and "Squat over the Pot". Works really well and is humorous enough to help the skier relax a little bit.

I prefer wood water skis for teaching, especially kids.. All the fiberglass skis I've used are too buoyant..

For my girl i melted lead sinkers into tuna cans that I pre-scorched the coating off, extracted, painted, and screwed the 1/2" high pucks onto the back of the skis just ahead of the fin, which then floated just in the position one desires.

Why bother skiing? Just skip right to barefooting.

Forgot I had this, I'm guessing the holes would effect buoyancy.

I just sold my pair of Snoopy Ski School skis to World Champion Lisa StJohn and that's one of the first things she said, she preferred the old wood skis because they were less floaty.
And make sure your non-swimmers trust their life jacket. |
