Nice! I have a 1980 as well. Just ordered an ATK remanufactured 351. I'm nervous I got the wrong rotation. Is your 1980 reverse rotation?

Thanks Connorssons. Sorry Gmars didn't mean to hijack your thread! Heads and intake manifold look great! What did you use to clean them up? Also, what kind of paint did you use? Good luck with the build!

Looks like you have a good start! Are the heads recently milled or did you start this process a while ago? Scotland. Hmmm.... always wondered what the ski season was like in Scotland/ UK area |

Sorry for the delay in replying had internet "issues" !
Just used a degreaser and and wire brush head on my drill to clean up the outside of the heads. I've used a can of Simoniz VHT, I'll give it all another few coats when its back together. As for the ski season in scotland, im pretty sure it was a Wednesday last year! |

Slightly off topic, but what can we expect from the 351 with oil changes every 50hrs before the whole engine needs a rebuild? I have a '96 GT40 with nearly 1,700hrs on it. Still running strong with little oil burn, and I'm wondering how long for a complete block rebuild/replacement. I replaced the heads about 300-350hrs ago, but nothing to the block or lower end. Can I expect 3,000? 2,500? Or am I looking at a rebuild in the next couple of years?
Thanks, Gordon |

Depends nearly 100% on your maintenance and keeping it running good.
If a plug fouls out, fix it right away don't run it till you wash down a cylinder. Cars with fuel injection can easily go 250,000 miles now without rebuild. Carbureted cars were lucky to go past 100,000. The FI makes a big difference in life if it is working well. Keep clean oil in it and enjoy it. |

Thanks MrMcD. Synthetic oils since day-one. I had a car that went 247k; would have made it to 300k but the lower timing tensioner went out for the second time (first time was under warranty) and the cost to pull the engine to replace it was more than the car was worth. That said, since our boats are always going uphill non-stop unlike a car that coasts and goes on level ground, they work much harder. I've always equated 50 hours to be about 2,000 miles, so my engine is currently at the equivalent of 68,000 miles. Will it run to 100k/2,000hrs? Or more? (hopefully more). Anyway, I'd like to hear what folks have gotten, so I may post this as a new thread so a wider audience will see it.
Thanks again for the response. Gordon |

I had a 78 Nautique, I bought it with 600 hours in 1980 so it was used hard for a couple years prior to me and I do not know that history but around 1000 hours I had to replace the heads. It was running like brand new when I sold it at 1,600 hours.
I have read of guys on this forum with 3,000 hours so it can happen with good maintenance. |

Yeah, site doesn't like phones and evidently ipads/ tablets. Laptops/ desktops only unfortunately.
There are various parts on the older Nautiques that are fairly hard to come by, even in the states so I can imagine what it may be in Scotland. I myself have recently been looking for a replacement timing cover, but the part remains a bit illusive - at any reasonable price anyway. |

Those top 2 bolts behind the water pump - one rusted solid, the other rounded over so I had to use a cut-off and got into the mounting surface a bit. It may still work, just doesn't look pretty and with the uneven surface I'm not sure how well it might stay torqued. So I thought if I could pick up a good used one at a decent price it would be worth swapping. |

Repair looks like it should be fine. Good work.
Maybe we could stop stepping all over this gentleman's thread...... |

Nice looking welds and yes, much less than a used one would have been, if you could even source one.
Keep the pictures coming, we love to see the progress |

Looks great! Progress feels good, yes?
Raining and cold in Kansas today., feels much like what I imagine Scotland is like right now. So naturally, I'm in the garage working on the boat. Well, intermitent breaks to warm up ... |
