What is a good replacement sealant for the round disk on top of the front and rear bowls?
Also...without the sealant applied, is it normal for the disk to be “wet” with fuel when the engine is running or is this an indication of an improper float setting? Thanks! |

Tom,
The plugs are called Welch plugs. They are there to cover/plug a hole that was needed to drill an internal hole in the carb and no, they shouldn't leak. Short of pulling the old and replacing them with new, many including myself have sealed them with epoxy. Leave the plugs in, clean them and the surrounding boss with some abrasive paper. Clean again with some solvent like acetone and then smear epoxy over the top. JB weld works. |

old thread There's an o ring in there that leaks and the epoxy works as long as your preparation is good like Pete said. If on the other hand, it's an external float level adjuster like MW mentioned, then it's just in need of a gasket like he said. Here's a picture of one with a plug, if it has an external adjustment you'll see a flat screw head right there.

Thanks for the additional info. This carb looks to be the original carb without externally adjustable floats😕 Also, the front bowl inlet area as well as the top plug have sealant on it but the rear inlet and plug do not and the top plug is wet when pressurized. I’ll epoxy the rear bowl’s top plug and inlet area plug. Hopefully that will stop the leak. |
