A pic would be great. Would love to trade if you need a BBC pump.

David, we have a pump from a PCM SBF.  I believe it's a Sherwood.  I can take a photo later this week if you still need one.  It sounds like the pump you have is the same pump on an older BBC PCM?

We are using a Sherwood water pump that was originally on a big block which had a larger impeller. Therefore the housing is a touch deeper than normal for a 302 commander setup. The back of the pump is touching the fuel line. Anyone have a smaller water pump they want to part with. We could do an even trade. We have a brand new impeller installed. No water through yet. Just a little dawn soap. What we have will work, it is very tight and we had to bend the fuel line some.

They aren’t stainless. They are brushed aluminum. The stainless ones look good though!

Dave,

Very pretty work here.  I am not trying to add tasks to your list.....I do have a thought though.  I love the commander exhaust manifolds, and I believe they are stainless. They would look really cool polished out.  Or at least sanded and finished with a very fine grit.  Would really set that motor off.  Just sayin'

I hope all is well.

Short stint with the boat this morning on way to the lake. Prop shaft cleaned up and in. Prop on. New wood wedges cut for under motor mounts. Engine in boat. Hoping to get it adjusted, mounted and aligned after Christmas. Merry Christmas all!

Starter bolted on, all wiring done, new batt cable and crimps. Oil pump primed. And she ran. Adj idle and timed at idle to 10 deg. Happy day. Packed up and left. Next up, install engine and align, install ancillary parts, install dog house, and decide when to water test/break in.

The latest 72 I have written down is in the 3340’s and was built end of May ‘72... with the switchover in July you’re prpbablh right in the edge one way or the other. Lifting rings match the typical 72’s so it’s a mixed bag. No HIN on the transom I assume?

My Skier is sn 3351.  i am in the early stages of rebuild.

The dipstick tube.....it went to a good home Wink

Counter clockwise for the drill direction. prime for about 15 seconds or so, rotate engine 90 degrees, prime, rotate engine 90 degrees....repeat till you're happy with oil flow at rocker arms.

If you get yourself a priming tool, you won't have any chance of the socket falling off the extension and landing in the sump

Not a necessity but nice to have, since you can clamp the guide in place with the distributor hold down bolt

1/4 inch hex for your 302 as compared to 5/16 for a 351.

Got to the barn last Fri evening. Couple of pics. The trans on the wheelbarrow is pre paint. As is the new press fit dipstick…thanks Ken. We still have to measure and adjust stick but happy to have a tube we think will work. Got the majority of the wiring done on the engine. Installed the trans. Still need to install and wire the starter as well as neutral safety. Then we hope to start it.

To circulate oil…drill with hex bit, spin slow, and do we remove a valve cover to see oil come up I think?

Tim,

I have switched to Yuengling Flight.  It is great. That VP of Marketing told me she did not want the Red Neck Frat Boy business, so I had to switch.  She knew me well. LKN Is way down too right now due to the lack of rain.

Drag that thing down to Lanier. Would probably take 9 hours to navigate the whole 38,000 acres. Well, maybe 35,000 as were 8 feet below full pool. Cousin Donald.... hopefully you upgraded your GoTo Brew by now TongueLOL  Of course LKN is 32,000 and a bit closer. You wouldn't even have to load it down with Brews. The beer is always cold and on tap at Pinkham Point. When you fill up the boat... you can fill up fill up your growler.Big smile

You can't drink all day if you don't start early in the morning!

I see zero reason for a nine hour break in unless you just enjoy the boating for 9 hours along with the full ice chest to maintain your good mood.

Not just saying this, I had 30 years in the engine rebuilding business, we made Piston Rings, Sealed Power, Engine Bearings, Federal-Mogul, Valves, Sealed Power, Gaskets, Fel-Pro, Pistons, Sealed Power, Sterling and TRW brand.  Called on engine machine shops all over the west coast that built between 50 and 1,500 engines per month.   We had to stand behind the quality of these parts, any time an engine broke these customers came back to us wanting explanations, warranty and help,  so I think what I share is conservative.   You need 20 minutes actual run time to help the valve train settle in before revving over 3,000 RPM.  Guys who rev brand new engines to high RPM before the 20 minute break in would sometimes pop a valve stem keeper and drop a valve.  The internal  parts need to mate to each other a little before high RPM exposure.
Your rings as stated will seat right away on first loaded pull at full throttle, if you chose the lower cost cast faced top rings this may take 4-10 accelerations but Moly top rings seat right away. ( and last 3-4 times longer)
Bearings are good after the 20 minute run time and good for life of the engine.
So, do not get it hot for any reason, that can be fatal.   Don't run it hard for any extended period of time because that builds excess heat.  By extended period, Give it the gas, let it rev till it stops accelerating, back off and run at lower RPM for a couple minutes so it can cool internally before doing that again.   Combustion heat is dangerous because it may not ever show up on your temp gauge.  High combustion heat is from too much timing or a lean burn condition.  Lean burn is usually a leak in the intake system or a carb not supplying enough fuel.  Both make the cylinders run much hotter which can damage rings and pistons in a very short amount of time.   If you hear detonation, pinging on acceleration do not try to run it hard, go back to the dock and work on your tune to get dialed in better.  After the first couple hours on the water run it any way you want.   If it was built with a problem inside no amount of soft break in will save it, it will break.   If you built it right and you are past the short break in window you can run it hard just do not get it hot.  Heat will kill your new engine and new engines can get hot fast so be careful and go have fun.
Many brand new engines are assembled, dropped in to the car and taken to the race track the next day and race!   Built right they go fast, if built wrong they break.   There really is not much in between other than owner abuse that causes early failure.  #1 cause excess heat, either lack of coolant or combustion temps, running it too hard too early or with to much timing or vacuum leaks/fuel issues.   #2 cause, lack of lubrication, usually caused by something set up wrong on assembly or a leak the driver does not catch till it is too late.

Not one word of this says you should not tell your wife the boat needs this 9 hour break in, that amount of time and drinking with buddies can be serious therapy and great for the soul.  Go do it and have fun!

I think that like Gary's link says, that's an oil pan for a 66-77 Bronco with a 289 or 302 and it's no longer available from Ford and there's no exact aftermarket version of it.

You can still find them used from some early Bronco shops

See the link below

Only problem is they probably used a different dipstick tube and dipstick, which would get you nowhere. And the engine angle being different would affect the readings.

What's broken on your tube?

The rivet holes are probably spaced the same on your pan and your other pan with the threaded hole, in which case you could use a threaded dipstick tube or a piece of 3/8 brake/fuel line because the inverted flare fitting is the same as the female threads in the pan..

You could then mark a dipstick with a "full" and "down a quart mark" and be good to go.

I don't think you will find a new pan. I needed one back in 94 ended up going to a engine rebuilder in Chicago. He had a mountain of pans and I picked through them until I found what I needed. My HM has the same pan as yours but I still had the original tube and stick with it. I drilled out the rivits on the old pan I replaced and saved the insert. It was a pan used on a PCM, the insert is cast iron and has a threaded dipstick mount rather than the slide in one. I kept it for my HM if it ever needs to come out again. You might be able to find an old damaged pan and switch them out as well. I don't have access to my books or pictures but I'd bet Ken has or could find our old posts here about those pans Ford part numbers which would help in your search. Ford pans are mysterious and confusing LOL

You mention cam is original, are the lifters original and on the exact same lobes?   If the lifters are new or if they are on new lobes your only choice is a cam break in.   If they are original and in the exact same locations you can skip the cam break in.

It is not coming along thus far.  We really need some measurements off of the Tique.  We can measure the ones we have, but frankly are not sure they are correct for the 302 pan we have.  We want to be sure.  Any thoughts on the pan in the pic and what vehicle it would have been on...197X Ford XXXXX (Bronco?) so we could buy new.

It seems to me that MrMcD didn't exactly answer your question about "how long can I run it on the engine stand?" Wink

You're just wanting to start it, get the timing set and look for leaks.

I'd figure that in 5 to 10 minutes you can easily do those things.

I wouldn't be afraid to run it up to around 1500 to 2000 rpm on the stand as long as your water supply can keep up with things

If it was a new cam you'd be running it at no load for about 20 minutes at varying speeds around 2000 rpm with no concern for the ring break in during that time

Since it's an old cam, running it no load for the same period of time isn't really any different for your rings and the rest of the engine, but in 5 to 10 minutes I'd figure you'd be all set with the checks you want to do.

Then it can get installed and run under load to accomplish your break in
