I'm a newbe to the site and a new owner of a 23 fn. I was looking at rudder a$$embly today and I have water leaking from the packing nut area, can packing be added with boat still in water ? I don't have a trailer yet, tring to find one now.thnx in advance

Perhaps it can be done Marty, but I wouldn't. It's pretty easy to drop the whole rudder through the hull when you loosen the nut if you're not careful. You repack it just like you do the drive shaft stuffing box. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

I would try adjusting it first before you try replacing the packing. Loosen the jam nut then tighten down the packing nut and then tighten the jam nut back up and it should take care of the leak. It should drip a little 1 or two drops a minute.

Thanx 4 the info. I will try today. I am dealing with Ernesto today. I keep the boat in lauderdale by the sea. will be helping tie up some boats. then I will deal with my rudder. let you know how it went.
