Hi, everyone. The kids are teenagers now and this is the first year my 1983 Ski Nautique has felt really cramped. I’m looking at a 1995 Super Sport in really nice cosmetic condition and wanted to get your opinions. From looking at this and other forums it looks like the biggest thing I need to look out for is hot start issues from the pre-FCC GT-40 Proboss engine. I’ll try a hot start check on a test drive but how common is that? Is there anything else I model-specific I should look out for? Thanks in advance.

Just check out the vinyl, gets expensive to replace on these because there is so much. Ask if steering cable has ever been replaced, not a hard job but more time consuming than a DD. I,knock on wood, have not had fuel pump trouble, but I don't live in the Texas heat either. I like to think the engine compartment venting and large compartment helps, wonder if it's more a DD thing. Gundriver has found a inexpensive fix for them compared to PCM's if it comes to be a problem. Typical Correct Craft gauge flicker when turning on the lights, but not enough to worry me yet. Super Sport side decals not available any more fyi. What kind of trailer, how many hours and price?

Despite the challenges that troubleshooting an efi can bring if you are unfamiliar with their operation, it is a great boat. I wouldn’t let that scare you though because any problem you encounter is not likely to be unique and the ccfan family is really generous with their troubleshooting expertise to help get you back up and running if you run in to something. similarly I came from an ‘83 SN 2001 to a ‘94 Sport Nautique, and now the ‘95 super sport.   I love the boat overall. Compared to the direct drives, it handles more sluggishly but I am a wakeboard enthusiast so the vdrive is best equipped to suit my needs and with friends and a growing family, the extra room the open now and arena seating provide are great.

As mentioned, the steering cable isn’t too difficult to change. Other than that, maintenance items are similar to a direct drive, albeit maybe a little more challenging for access - especiallY when it comes to belts and water pump impeller.

My 96 was a bit troublesome when I first got it. I replaced the steering cable, high and low pressure pumps, fuel filter and ignition switch. It’s been three seasons with zero issues. Very reliable and strong. The Super Sport is the bargain if you want to fit the family and friends for an afternoon cruise or wakeboard session. With a full boat you really make a wake—without ballast.

Gary is right there’s a lot of vinyl but that’s where you can fit them all in. I’ve been replacing vinyl as needed: a few pieces each season. Makes it easy on the pocketbook.

Good to me anyway on that price I paid that for mine 5 years ago with half the hours and a new trailer. No tower or sac's though.

Thanks for all of the feedback! Sorry for the late reply. For some reason I can't post to the website from my phone. So to answer questions:

  • The vinyl is in great shape. I don't think it's original. It doesn't feel quite as nice as the vinyl in my 83. It's still nice, just not as nice (and a lot newer).

  • The steering cable has likely not been replaced. I know it's a pain but I think as long as it doesn't do something weird like break in half I can handle it.

  • The trailer is a Ramlin. It's in great shape. The frame isn't showing any rust. The tires are new (and actual trailer tires). It has bearing buddies on it. The bunk carpet is good.

  • I did a test run where I ran it hard to get it warmed up and stopped it for 15 minutes and it started back up fine. Fortunately, it was 100F that day. I found the post talking about using a different fuel pump with fittings so that's good if I ever need it. Everything else on the test run also went well.

It is the one at Buxton. They're taking the 83 on a trade and offering a really good deal so we're taking it. We'll hopefully be on the water with it by this weekend. Or if not the Ski will take a farewell tour. I hate to see the 83 Ski go. It's been a great boat for our family and I always dreamed of owning a 2001. But I think going forward this is a lot better move for us, especially since I haven't slalomed in ages. I'm also very happy to be staying in the Correct Craft family. You guys are the best.

Awesome.... I thought it was a good looking boat.... Phil and co are great people. I've just bought parts and had a few service items done but they treat me like I bought a new G series.

What's your primary lake?

My primary lake is Lake Worth. Lake Grapevine is closer but is way too crowded from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I have boat passes for both though. Living in NRH, where do you boat at?

I took the boat out over the weekend and it was a blast. After about an hour of riding, it does have a long start when warm. It never fails but takes a second or two sometimes. I found the GT-40 ProBoss manual so I'll probably dig into diagnosing that. It also takes on more water than I think it should. I'll check the usual suspects there. I loved my Ski Nautique but I feel like this is a better family boat. I do feel like I'm going to have a love/hate relationship with the v-drive though after looking at where the prop shaft log is.

We have a place on Whitney so we are generally there if we are on the water.. We'll ocassionally go to grapevine but mostly just to cruise around and swim with the kids. It's always super crowded.

I'll keep an eye out for it running around. Good looking boat.

Before I'd go digging too deep give it a good tuneup- plugs, cap and rotor and go from there. Mine starts instantly when cold, noticeably longer when warm but never any cause for concern. Not as snappy acceleration or sharp handling as your Ski but can't be beat for family room and comfort. I agree with the comment on the log but if you make it so the dividers come out easy,it helps

The slow start when hot isn’t normal. Gary’s advice is good as far as cap rotor and plugs. Take it back to Buxton and have them repack the rudder and shaft log. Should
Not be seeing lots of water coming in after
The first time out.

Enjoy!

Our 95 Ski with the GT40 Pro Boss starts instantly 19 times out of 20.
When it does not catch on that first touch of the key I assume the fuel did not prime.
Turn key off, turn key on, wait 3 seconds for it to pressurize and start.
Fuel injected engines need full pressure in the fuel rail to start.
Turning on the key to run allows it to pressurize, then turn to start.

I had a GT-40 in my old Supra, it was from a '98 or '99 Nautique originally. It never, ever started quickly. I of course periodically changed plugs, fuel filters, cap, rotor, and even plug wires. Went through a few batteries over the years, no different.

The engine was completely rebuilt at a machine shop and all the ignition parts replaced upon reassembly. It behaved exactly the same after the rebuild (that was for an unrelated reason, mind you). I got used to it, because it always did start, no matter what.

It started slower than any other GT-40 I've ever known, it was just how that engine was, and I can't explain it.

I never did post an update. I’m definitely loving the new (to me) boat. I thought I’d hate driving around something larger but i got used to it pretty quickly. It doesn’t handle like a direct drive but it’s still way better than an I/O. The hard starting issue was from the previous owner using a deep cycle battery. I replaced it with a marine starting battery and it starts right up. The water intrusion looks like it’s coming in at the rub rail near the swim deck. That gets submerged when I add ballast for wakeboaridng and I can see water trickling in from that area. Thanks for everyone’s input!
