Looking at 95 Super Sport

Hi, everyone. The kids are teenagers now and this is the first year my 1983 Ski Nautique has felt really cramped. I’m looking at a 1995 Super Sport in really nice cosmetic condition and wanted to get your opinions. From looking at this and other forums it looks like the biggest thing I need to look out for is hot start issues from the pre-FCC GT-40 Proboss engine. I’ll try a hot start check on a test drive but how common is that? Is there anything else I model-specific I should look out for? Thanks in advance.

Despite the challenges that troubleshooting an efi can bring if you are unfamiliar with their operation, it is a great boat. I wouldn’t let that scare you though because any problem you encounter is not likely to be unique and the ccfan family is really generous with their troubleshooting expertise to help get you back up and running if you run in to something. similarly I came from an ‘83 SN 2001 to a ‘94 Sport Nautique, and now the ‘95 super sport.   I love the boat overall. Compared to the direct drives, it handles more sluggishly but I am a wakeboard enthusiast so the vdrive is best equipped to suit my needs and with friends and a growing family, the extra room the open now and arena seating provide are great.

As mentioned, the steering cable isn’t too difficult to change. Other than that, maintenance items are similar to a direct drive, albeit maybe a little more challenging for access - especiallY when it comes to belts and water pump impeller.

My 96 was a bit troublesome when I first got it. I replaced the steering cable, high and low pressure pumps, fuel filter and ignition switch. It’s been three seasons with zero issues. Very reliable and strong. The Super Sport is the bargain if you want to fit the family and friends for an afternoon cruise or wakeboard session. With a full boat you really make a wake—without ballast.

Gary is right there’s a lot of vinyl but that’s where you can fit them all in. I’ve been replacing vinyl as needed: a few pieces each season. Makes it easy on the pocketbook.

Good to me anyway on that price I paid that for mine 5 years ago with half the hours and a new trailer. No tower or sac's though.

Awesome.... I thought it was a good looking boat.... Phil and co are great people. I've just bought parts and had a few service items done but they treat me like I bought a new G series.

What's your primary lake?

We have a place on Whitney so we are generally there if we are on the water.. We'll ocassionally go to grapevine but mostly just to cruise around and swim with the kids. It's always super crowded.

I had a GT-40 in my old Supra, it was from a '98 or '99 Nautique originally. It never, ever started quickly. I of course periodically changed plugs, fuel filters, cap, rotor, and even plug wires. Went through a few batteries over the years, no different.

The engine was completely rebuilt at a machine shop and all the ignition parts replaced upon reassembly. It behaved exactly the same after the rebuild (that was for an unrelated reason, mind you). I got used to it, because it always did start, no matter what.

It started slower than any other GT-40 I've ever known, it was just how that engine was, and I can't explain it.
