Looking for a mechanic in the Jacksonville Florida area to work on PCM 351. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Most mechanics in the area only want to work on outboards......

Chris,
Too bad you're not closer to Panama City. I know Jody would be able to take care of you.

What's the problem? What year is the 351?

Welcome to CCfan. Tell us more and pictures are always welcomed.

I just recently purchase a 1992 SN open bow. The boat is in fantastic shape and has been running great since the day I purchased it until the last trip. Ran 10 miles to a restaurant with no issues. On the way home the boat started right up and after a short idle through a no wake zone went to get on plane and the boat bogged down and turned off. Tried starting several times and motor would turn over but not start.

I've only owned newer outboards and have always worked on them myself. Still not familiar enough with the inboard.

I checked the fuel water separator which was good and the 2 Protec fuses on back of the motor were not "popped"

Chris,
Have you checked for spark? Check and get back to us.

The Protec systems are noted for failure especially the early ones. Some have replaced them with standard distributors and there are even kits available.

Thanks Pete for the suggestion. Panama City is about 4 hours from Jax. I do have customers as far away as Atlanta and Mobile.
Thanks again..
Jody

You can quickly identify if your engine has the Pro-Tec system. These Ford small-blocks have the distributor at the front of the engine (unlike the Chev which as the distributor at the rear of the engine). Does your engine have a traditional distributor at the front of the engine with spark plug wires all coming from the distributor? If not, do the spark plug wires run toward the rear of the engine, on top of the transmission? The plug wires are fed by a coil pack of 4 coils -- 2 plug wires per coil. If this is the case, then you have the Pro-Tec ignition/engine management system.

If you have the Pro-Tec system, the system may be failing as Pete mentions. When my Pro-Tec system started failing, my engine had various intermittent issues including failure to start for no apparent reason, sudden loss of power, etc. There was no predictability to these events as they appeared totally random. Things got worse until the engine simply shut down and refused to start. I had to be towed over 20 miles to a marina after that little incident.

Not to worry, though -- you can swap out the Pro-Tec system and go "old school" with a distributor. The link below is a thread from JPASS that chronicles his Pro-Tec swap out.

Yup, I would check the Pro-tec system. I am in Orlando if I can be of any assistance. And Welcome.

Thanks for replies. Sounds like the Pro-Tec system needs to go. Looks simple enough but I just don't have the time to do it.

In all honesty Probably quicker than driving across town to a mechanic, drop off and check in. Then come back, wait for the lowest paid burn out at the shop to find your boat, hitch up, drive off and hope they got it right without having to come back. All within hours that you’re probably working.

Lol, you are probably right. Going to keep researching the pro-tec swap out.

Also forgot to mention that the coil pack looks like it has a sticky residue coming out of it....... Is this a sign of a failing coil pack?

Does this motor have a carb or injection? If you have injection you will have to change to a carb. Im in Orlando and would be able to assist you. 407 679 7400

My 92 doesn't have the protec. Was that just an option for that year or did a PO already change it out?

How long have you owned the 92?

Pro Tec was an upgrade on the optional 280hp “Power Plus” flavors.

The power plus (which included protec) was optional on both the base and HO flavors of the 351w.

I ended up taking the boat to Don at Outlaw Marine. Dropped it off last Saturday and picked it up on Friday. Runs great now! Thanks for the recommendation.

Glad to hear. I hadn’t met Don in person nor had them do any work for me but he’s helped me out finding some used parts and treated me very very fair.
