I pulled the water neck off my motor, PCM Chevy 350, to change the thermostat. It had a very thick gasket on it and when I cut it off I find that the brass insert is not flush. It is not supposed to be this way? correct?? Should I dremel it flush or try to knock it in with a hammer?
Thanks,
Adam

It looks like a pilot to me. Does it fit into the bore of the mating part? It may need cleaning up 1st.

Its supposed to look like that. There may also be an orientation sleeve, plastic to hold the T stat. The gasket should have 2 rivets in it, if not, wrong gasket.

That all sounds like good advice... if one were running a mercruiser.

The piece that isn’t flush may be the described “orientation sleeve”, Pcm used brass. It spaces the thermostat up and should move relatively easily (unless corroded in place).

Not sure what to make of that gasket comment.
